On the plane home from Grandma's I sat next to my 10-year old brother Oliver who was fast asleep with his tattered journal closed in his lap. I was curious what he wrote so as carefully as I could I eased the journal out of his grasp and layed it on the plane table in front of me. I cautiously opened the first page, and read it. My heart sank, this is what Oliver had written:
August 12, 2012
Today is the first day of fifth grade, I guess I've prepared myself a little for all the bullying to come. I know that if I tell Mom, Dad, or Eva they would ask me why I haven't told anyone about this bullying, but really I have told someone, well sort of, I've told my diary. Now I'm just waiting for someone to find my journal and dare to open and read it so they can help me out. If you have read this I want you to leave me a note in here. I might as well face it, I dont have the courage to tell anyone.
******I felt a lump of guilt form in my throat, I knew it wasnt my fault that Oliver was going through this but, i couldnt believe I hadnt found out. I suddenly felt like a bad sister. I felt ignorant, and terrible that I had teased him not know what all went on, but I told my self, "Now I know, and now it's time to act."
I flipped the pages till the very last one, the only empty one and wrote:
Oliver,
I read your journal, and I am so sorry. I didnt know any of this was happening, and if I did I would have acted on it right away. Now that I know this it is time to act. I know how to deal with this. Dont worry it will all get better. I love you,

*****I set the journal in his lap, leaned back and closed my eyes. It was time to think up a plan.
