An atom is what everything is made out of, from you and me to your much loved devices.
Atoms consist of three parts, electrons, protons and neutrons. The number of protons is always the same as the number of electrons. If there are too many protons the atom will decay because there must be a balance between protons and electrons. Protons are positively charged and electrons are negatively charged so they both balance out the charges at work in the atom. Neutrons have no charge. The word atom means smallest, but we of course know that atoms aren't the smallest thing we know of and that they are made out of smaller particles called sub-atomic particles.
But maybe sub-atomic particles aren't the smallest particles in existence, maybe sub-atomic particles are made up of even smaller particles.
