Chapter Eight:

Cassidy’s grin dropped off her face and was replaced with a look of bewilderment.  Officer Clyde was completely insane if he thought she had anything to do with Alexandria’s death.

Cassidy opened her mouth to protest when Officer Clyde grabbed her arm and twisted it behind her back.  Cassidy was forced out of her seat and was standing awkwardly, half leaning on Cale.  Officer Clyde snapped the handcuffs around Cassidy’s wrists.

Cassidy struggled against the handcuffs and the tight grip Officer Clyde still had on her arm.  Cale stood up and faced the officer.  Lola stood up as well standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Cale.

  “Move,” Officer Clyde said impatiently.

Cale didn’t move but his eyes narrowed.

“Move!” Officer Clyde snapped.  He reached out and shoved Lola aside.  When Lola fell she twisted to the side so that she landed on a desk.  The desk slid forwards and bumped into another desk and then they both fell over.

“Lola,” Ms. Edwards scolded.  “Pick those up and sit down.”

  “Yes,” Lola mumbled.

“Cassidy sit down,” Ms. Edwards said.  She looked up and gasped.  “Oh my,” She began before walking over to Cassidy.  “Officer Clyde,” She said reaching for Cassidy who was shifted around and moved out of anyone’s reach.  “What is the meaning of this?” She asked angrily.

“This girl is under arrest for the murder of Alexandria Mitchell.”  Officer Clyde announced loudly.

“She didn’t know Alexandria!” Half the class exploded fury echoing around the room.

Danielle sniffled and stood up.  “I might not like Cassidy very much, but she didn’t know Alexandria and she would have no motive.”

Cassidy felt her chest swell with pride.  Despite being new her classmates and even Danielle were coming forwards to protect her.

“Listen to them,” Cassidy pleaded.  “I didn’t do anything, I swear,” She said.

Officer Clyde ignored them all and pushed past the line of kids that had formed.  He dragged Cassidy out and Cale ran after her.

Cassidy made her body go limp but she dragged her feet slowing down Officer Crazy.  Cale came running around the corner and he reached for her hand.  Cassidy grabbed his and sobs broke through the barrier in her.

“Cale what’s going to happen?” She asked.

Cale shook his head looking frustrated.  “I don’t know,” He said angrily.  “I’m staying with you and then I’ll call mom.”  His eyes were glistening under the lights.  Cassidy was scared more so than ever when she saw the tears in her brother’s eyes.

Cale was the strong one.  He was the one who was never afraid.  He didn’t show his weaknesses and he overcame every obstacle in his way.  For him to have tears in his eyes this was bad.

Officer Clyde dragged the Reynolds girl into the back of squad car.  He locked her in and enjoyed a smug look of satisfaction that sat on his face.  The girl’s ‘protector’ was standing in front of his door.

“Let my sister go,” Cale said.  He motioned to the squad car which Cassidy was sitting in.  “She didn’t do anything.  She can’t have done anything.”

  Officer Clyde ignored him.

Cassidy began banging her handcuffed hands on the window.  She had twisted herself around and gotten her arms up into an uncomfortable position that allowed her to bang on the windows.  She could see football players coming closer to inspect the situation.

Cassidy recognised Henry as one of them and began banging more furiously.  Henry came up to the window and his eyes got wide when he recognised Cassidy.

Cassidy watched him confront the officer and Cale and then Officer Clyde opened the door, jumped in and slammed his foot on the pedal.  The car shot forward and Cassidy looked back helplessly at Cale and Henry.
