I woke up to a hoot like so many nights before coming from outside my window in the darkness, shifting to my left side in my tiny bed so that my head cradled in my arm to get a better view, the other wrapped in my tangled curls. 'So your back again huh," I said to the dark kicking off my covers I felt too hot on for this July night, my sweaty T-shirt clung to my body as I laid on my back waiting for my eyes to adjust to the moon shining threw the small window of my room. 'HOOT!" The owl bellowed out from the tree rooted outside my house, I looked up in time to see its wings flapping almost angrily, the silver tips catching the Moon's light illuminating its white form I could see it better now. It was all white with sliver wings and long sharp talons that hooked firmly to the tree for balance as it flapped its wings again. A single black streak of feathers went from the top of its beak to the back of its head. I've seen this same owl almost every night since I moved here to PinesBurge and every night it would call to me like it wanted me to come with it.
If only it was possible. I moving all the way out to the middle of nowhere was a big jump for not just me but my little brother Colin, who was extremely smart for a seven year old. We both knew that Mom and Dad was getting divorced between all the arguments and long nights of my dad sleeping on the couch or not even coming home at all,but it never really settled in until everything was put in boxes and on a truck headed to here. Mom was the one who filed for the divorce and seeing here pack up all of our things was like watching your memories being erased, it would never be the same after that I knew that even now as I laid staring at the celling cracks and old white plaster that covered the small four walls of my new to me room. I still had my things from home here, my purple bookcase pushed into the farthest corner of my room the top of it covered with trinkets I collected since my childhood, my rusted brown trunk was at the bottom of my bed filled with jeans I had yet to unpack, the plain white dresser, my TV and stand, and my sickly green circular rug that had a pinkish stain from where I had spilled cool-aid on it when I jumped while watching American Horror Story.
Yep everything was here and yet I felt like I wasn't, like I didn't belong here in this room, in this house even. I couldn't really miss my old house in Lexington nor could I say I was leaving something behind there. I didn't really have anyone to say goodbye too besides Jonny that lived across the street, he would always play with Colin since they were only a year apart. Not anyone at my school to say Id miss really. I wasn't bullied or anything but I wasn't like the center of the crowd, always the wall flower. As I kept watching the celling it kept getting brighter and brighter warning me morning was coming soon. I closed my eyes and listened to the hooting still outside my window calling to me, "Take me with you," I whispered as I drifted into unconsciousness.
