"Who is he mom?" I could hear the franticness and pain in her voice as she took the most of the story's I've fed her since she was born. I don't know when she stopped believing the words that would come out of my mouth whenever she brought up her father. If I had admitted the truth to her it would become real too real. And that truth is what I can't bare. I've become this deceitful middle-aged woman still lying to my beautiful girl. But today reality sets in she needs to know even if I may end up losing her. "He's married and has grown kids," I said as my heart felt cold as the words come tumbling out unexpectedly.
She looked straight at me crossing her arms defiantly "go on I'm listening."
I took a deep breath to muster up my courage to continue. "They live in England. He's 53 now. Has two girls. The youngest is about your age and the oldest is a few years older. They're both in uni. He's been married to the same woman for over twenty years now."
To say she was shocked was an understatement. She knew the math. By now she knew I was with a married man who just had a baby and a three-year-old daughter at the time of everything.
"I'm so sorry Lorna" I apologize sincerely wanting her forgiveness for everything I've done wrong. By now her arms were uncrossed and her sarcasm gone, Her eyes were dark grey with a hint of blue that look so bleak at this moment.
"He doesn't know I even exist does he, mom?" looking at her face full of sorrow nearly killed me. I wanted so much to wrap my arms around her and comfort her.
I shook my head as response. Silently she walked away as she left the room to leave me to my thoughts so she could think.
