What do you do when you know no one is around to hear you scream? My name is Gracie and this is the story of how I died. It was about four months since my friend, Shane, had passed away. It was such a tragedy hearing about how he took his own life just because no one ever seemed to notice him. Just thinking about it made me even sadder, but it’s my senior year and I am determined to make the best out of it.  Walking into the school was always the worst feeling when you know that other people know that one of your close friends had committed suicide. The counselors would always pull me out of class and see “how I was doing”. That was the one question I hated hearing from someone. It made me feel so awkward saying “I’m doing fine.” I would have to say with a fake smile plastered on my face. I wish I could just make them all go away.

Going home was the one place where I know I was not going to be questioned for “how I was doing”. I would go into my room for hours and coming out only when I had to use the bathroom and when I would get hungry. My room was my place where nobody would ever bother me.

It was around Halloween when a few friends and I decided to take a trip to a small haunted house just down the street from our school. It was a Monday, when Halloween rolled around. Right after school we all piled into my car and drove down. When we went in I felt like I’ve been here before. Like, in a dream or something like that. All I knew was that I wanted to get out of there and fast. I went to ask if anyone had a flashlight but all my friends stole my car and left me there all alone.

I ignored the feeling in my stomach telling me to get out of there and never come back. I went up the creaky stairs to investigate, but all I found was some old photos. When I went to turn and leave the room a man in a chef’s coat was in front of me. “I’m so sorry I thought nobody lived in here anymore.” I said panicked. He looked so familiar to me that it drove me crazy to not know who he was. It was kind of hard to see his face with his hair in his face, but when he lifted his chin I knew exactly who he was. “Adam!” I exclaimed. Ever since we were kids he always said he wanted to marry me, but I would always tell him no. For some odd reason I had a feeling he wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“Going somewhere?” he said in that scraggly voice of his. “Yes. I’m leaving, and going to go find my friends.”  I said trying to maneuver around him. He just stood there and looked at me with those beautiful piercing blue eyes. When he looked at me I felt like I could never move. “What are you doing here?” I asked him. “I could be asking you the same thing.” He shot back at me. He took my wrist and started walking me downstairs into a small room with a bunch of sharp objects. I knew right then that I was going to die.

He sat me down in a chair and tied me in with some rope and leather straps attached to the arms and legs. I knew I was no use fighting. He was too strong for me, and he who torture me even more. I looked around at the small room and started making observations. The room was lit by a single hanging light bulb, the room smelled of rotting meat and flesh, and there were no windows.

He took my hand, kissed it, and asked “Why won’t you marry me? I could make you happy. I could give you the moon on a string.” I just sat there and looked at him. “We don’t belong together and we both know this Adam.” I said plainly. He just stared at me with his blue eyes sparkling. “Well then, you have forced my hand.” He said taking his hand and placing it on my shoulder and slowly moving it downward. I head butted in the face, and I heard him yelp with pain.

I saw the anger rage in his eyes. He grabbed my face and kissed me right on the mouth. It tasted awful. He pulled away and smiled. Adam picked up a knife and held it to my throat. “Tell me that you love me, Gracie.” I started to cry. “TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME!” He yelled right in my face. “I love you.” I whispered. “What?” he got closer. “I love you.” I said a little bit louder. “WHAT?!?” he yelled. “I LOVE YOU, ADAM!” I yelled back. His smile vanished. He put the knife back on the table. “Then marry me.” He said.

The thought of being with him forever made me sick. “Why me?” I asked. “Because, you were the only one who was nice to me, and you talked to me. You never ignored me. EVER!” he said leaning on the table. This was the only time I regretted being nice to somebody. “I got an idea.” He said with that nasty smile of his. “What would that be?” I asked. “If you say, yes, we can both leave this place and never return, or if you say, no, I’ll torture you until you say, yes.” He smiled. “So, let’s try it out. Will you marry me?” He asked. “No.” I said looking away. Adam took the knife and stabbed me right in my leg. I let out a scream that someone was bound to hear. “Let’s try it one more time. Will you marry me?” He said right in my face. “No.” I said spitting on him. So, he went back to the table and grabbed another knife and jammed it in my side. I let out an even louder scream. I screamed so much that my throat was raw. “Now, will you marry me?” he said he said grabbing another knife off the table. “No Adam, I will never marry you.” I said firmly. “I thought you were going to say that.” He took the knife held it to my throat and started sliding the cold blade across my throat. I knew I was dead when I opened my eyes. No one was around me. Nobody was there. I yelled and screamed and nobody heard me. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if no one was around to hear you scream?
