7.
7 minutes until I would be 18.
I stare at my alarm clock as I lay in my bed. The seconds feel like hours as they tick away.
Every tick feels painstakingly slow. But, the years leading up to this moment felt like centuries.
I keep my eyes on the clock as I imagine the shape I would receive tomorrow. No one ever gets an actual shape. Just an arrangement of lines at different lengths, like a barcode, that connect to another necklace to create a single charm.
I remember my mother's charm that I've looked at everyday for as long as I can remember.
It's nothing special or out of the ordinary. But, just the sight of it makes my heart swell. My mother is a gorgeous woman with chocolate brown hair and golden eyes. The doctor's say her eyes are some type of a mutant formation. They're so uncommon only 7% of people in the world have them. They dance like fire when she laughs, and twinkle like stars when she's sad.
I've tried to imagine my father. I don't know what he looks like, because my mother doesn't have any pictures. I don't what he was like or anything, but I imagine he must have been more than amazing if he was a perfect match for my mother.
Suddenly, in a rush, my thoughts are brought back what led me to these thoughts.
I check the clock to find it to be 11:59 p.m. I looked at the perfect moment to see the flashing red numbers change to midnight.
I smile to myself knowing that I could leave at any given moment. I could go anywhere, do anything. And that, was the best feeling I've ever felt in the entirety of my life.
The feeling of freedom.
"Happy Birthday." I whisper as I smile to myself faintly while the soft, dark outlines of the clock blur out as I drift into sleep.
