Being in a city like Gotham can come at a hefty price. Making a "proper" living isn't always easy, and it can cost you your life if you decide to screw with the wrong person. In the part of town where my sister and I grew up, police don't even bother to monitor it anymore. The level of crime is out of control along with dozens of other things. I like to say there's a special place reserved in hell for the citizens of Gotham. Doesn't matter if they're an innocent kid or a fully grown asshole, shit's bound to happen.
I was sitting in my aunt's kitchen drinking my black coffee as routine calls for on Fridays at 3:00 a.m. "Apparently there's been a huge decrease in the number of street kid crimes since the Big Bang. " she said, as she lifted the newspaper she'd been reading. The Big Bang was an explosion of one of the factories down the street from the old post office. It wasn't a pretty sight as you can imagine, but no use getting worked up about it, it's not like them brats would've grown up and magically had brains the size of boulders. Rats like them don't get a fair shot at life, trust me, I used to one be them. My life is a total fuck up, but it could be worse. I don't remember much of my mother, but I do know she always said to be grateful no matter what kind of situation you're in, 'cause it could always be worse.
"It's a shame, isn't it? All those kids..but they were rats, so it shouldn't be bothered with." My aunt exclaimed. She and I thought a lot alike. "I should go, I start work at 3:15." I reminded her. If I didn't, she'd fall asleep on the chair and wake up wondering where in the hell I ended up. She's been protective of me ever since she found me on the streets when I was 11, I'm turning 22 in 3 weeks. "You be safe, sweets!" She yelled as I walked out of the door of the rickety house to go to my filthy-ass job.
