Chapter 5

After we make it inside the JM building we find and walk into the classroom. We look for an empty table. As I look around, I realize the room is really decorated. There are posters and paintings everywhere. The tardy bell rings, as Mr. Parker walks up to the front of the room.

“Hey kids! This year, I’m going to make English come to life! I love high schoolers, and I hope you enjoy English class this year! I will teach you about…” He continued explaining what we will learn, while I stare off into space. I look around, and I saw that our whole class was freshmen. I see Stacie, Clara, Mitch and Jordan sitting at one table together. We used to be really good friends with them. For some reason, over the summer, we all drifted apart. My mom warned me that would happen in high school. I zoned out, examining the room. I was just about to drift off when something caught my attention-

“…and don’t get comfortable, because I have a seating chart made for you all already! It is based off of your academic achievements, and your personality. That’s not it! We will also be using bean bags instead of desks!” At that, everyone broke out into whispers. How would he know about our personality yet? I found that extremely offensive, almost like he was judging us by his first impressions. I have also noticed that he also has a habit of calling us 'kids'. He started talking again on his judgmental opinions, when –thank god- the bell rang.

“I have never been happier to hear the bell ring.” I whispered to Malarie.

“I know right! That guy gives me the creeps! Who does he think he is?!” She replied. I think Mr. Parker heard because all of a sudden-

“Excuse me, Miss Valentine? Do you have something to say? I advise not to say things about others when the ‘other’ you are speaking of is not present. Especially when, in fact, they are present.” He spat at Malarie. I didn't understand a word that just came out of  that man's mouth.

“I… uh…” She started to reply, when Mr. Parker interrupted her.

“Don’t ruin your apology with excuses. That is a detention for you Miss Valentine.”

“Please, Mr. Parker, it’s not what it seems…”

“I don’t want to hear it. I will see you tomorrow afternoon in my classroom. Understood?”

“Understood.” She said under her breath.

We walked away, towards our lockers.

“I am so sorry I got you into that mess, Malarie.” I apologized.

“It’s okay; I shouldn’t have said my share so loudly. I’m the one who got caught, so I guess I deserve the punishment.” She said. I was so lucky to have a friend like her. After all, it was my fault in the first place; I was the one who started bagging on him first. I should be the one with the detention.

“I am so excited! Now we can go eat lunch with Josh’s cute friends!” Malarie exclaimed. I unlocked my locker to find a note fall out. I opened it, and it said: ‘Phoebe- I cannot wait to see you at lunch today! Meet me in the cafeteria. –J’. I took out my heavy books, and left my binder and iphone in my bag, and my lunch box in it. Malarie and I walked towards the cafeteria.
