Chapter 7
My Dad…. my Dad was at the front of the classroom, dressed professionally.
“Hello, class. I am Mr. Williams. Mr. Garner has just undergone major heart surgery, but will be back tomorrow.” he said. I was very relieved, but since when has my Dad been a substitute teacher?
“Mr. Garner has asked me to hand out the syllabus, and a review sheet from last year’s history class, and that will be homework that is due Friday.” He handed half of the stack of papers to Madison, then the other half to me to hand out. I started hearing whispers, like: “Is that Phoebe’s Dad? Loser!” and, “Dude, the guy is probably making the whole thing up so his little girl will be ‘safe in high school’”. I was mortified. I was having a decent day up until now. I wonder if Luke knows, if he doesn’t, at least I’ll be able to tell him next period. Next period is PE! That means I’ll see Josh next period! Maybe today isn’t that bad after all. Then the bell rang. I walked out of the classroom, feeling… relaxed. Almost as if, this year, I get a clean slate; and I do. I smiled and walked up to Malarie.
“So… that was a little uncalled for, huh?” Malarie said to me.
“About that… did you hear the other kids whispering about my Dad and me?” I asked.
“Oh my god, that was bogus!”
“I know. That’s what I thought. Why on earth would my dad decide to substitute at random without even telling me? At least Mom will understand when I get home and tell her how inconsiderate he is!” I said, my anger rising with each word.
“Calm down, ‘hot stuff’.” She said, laughing, and mocking Josh.
“Nice, speaking of Josh, let’s get to PE.” I said, as we walked to the gymnasium.
[A/N: Sorry for the extra short chapter, but I'll make it up in chapter 8, I promise!]
