In September of 1980, Adam met his high school crush Marcie (then Hoyt) while attending the Thomas Hilfiger High School in Lincoln. Adam finally got the courage to talk to Marcie just before Christmas Break 1980 and tell her he liked her and it turned out Marcie liked Adam back. They spent Spring Break of 1981 together going on dates and hanging out. By September 1981 Marcie entered into her Senior year at high school and Adam thought their relationship would be ending soon since Marcie would be graduating high school, but as Marcie's final year came to a close Marcie told him not to worry and they traded phone numbers and email addresses and stayed in touch.
Marcie had completed high school with flying colours so she decided to try her luck at Harvard University and to her amazement she got accepted. She started taking Law in September 1982 to fulfill her dream of becoming a lawyer and the first female lawyer in her family.
Adam graduated high school in June 1983 and applied to go to school at UCLA to become a physiotherapist. Adam called Marcie as soon as he found out that he had gotten accepted to UCLA. Adam and Marcie talked for 2 hours when Marcie said "I would like to move out to UCLA with you and take online courses just so our friendship can blossom" and Adam replied "Have I ever told you I love you?". By the end of their 4 hour telephone call they both came to the realization that the loved each other very much and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
As soon as Adam and Marcie ended their phone call, Adam immediately called his mother Mary and told her that he had been accepted to UCLA for a degree in Sports Medicine. He mentioned to her that he would be able to help her and Billy financially, but just from afar for a few years while he completed his degree and his plans to move out to California with Marcie. Mary told Adam before he hung up "I give you my blessing with Marcie, I can't wait to meet her and Good Luck at UCLA".
With Christmas 1983 getting closer and Marcie coming home for Christmas break from Harvard, Adam called Marcie and asked her how she wanted Christmas to look. Much to Adam's surprise she answered with what he had been thinking about for the last couple of years "Now that we have been going out together for 3 years, I want you to meet my family (mom- Caroline, dad- Joe, younger brother Josh, sister Leanne and older brother Paul) and I want to meet your family this Christmas too". Then Marcie said "I have an idea... We go to Christmas Eve Mass at St. Matthew's Catholic Parish with my family and have a late Christmas Eve dinner at my parents place and then we spend Christmas morning opening presents at both my parent's house and your house and we have Christmas Dinner with your mom and brother and sisters on Christmas Day." and Adam replied "I think that's a lovely idea".
Adam woke up on the morning of Thanksgiving to his mother standing at the foot of his bed holding the cordless phone in one hand and a thrilled look on her face. Mary said "You'll never guess who just called!" Adam was so confused his mouth dropped to the floor. "Your girlfriend Marcie." Adam stared at his mom asking "Why did she call when I wasn't even expecting her too?" and Mary replied "She says she gets to come home for the Thanksgiving Long Weekend and she wanted to have dinner with us."
Adam arose from his bed, gave his mother a big hug, told her he was so thankful that she was his mother and went to have a shower and shave to get ready to see his high school sweetheart.
Adam had told his mother about Marcie before, but she had not met her. Adam thought he was more excited to have them meet than his mom was excited to Marcie, but he didn't say that, he was just excited about his mom meeting Marcie. Although Adam was a little nervous, he was thankful that Marcie wanted to have Thanksgiving Dinner with him, Billy and his mother. As Mary was busying herself in the Kitchen and just about to put the turkey in the oven, the phone rang and Adam ran from the living room to answer it. It was Marcie and she said hi. Adam replied "Hi, how are you my sweetheart?" When Mary heard that she came running over and asked if she could talk to Marcie for a second. Mary told Marcie "I've just put the turkey in the oven." Marcie said "Thank you Ms. McEntire for making Thanksgiving dinner and having me over. I can't wait to meet you." Mary replied "Of course, you're very welcome sweetie and I'm excited to meet you too. And you can call me mum if you wish."
Mary finally finished cooking and unstuffing the Turkey when the doorbell rang. I ran to the front door to open it and there was Marcie standing in a gorgeous orange dress with a tin foil-wrapped plate in one hand and a bottle of Red Wine in the other hand. Adam yelled into the house from the front porch "Mom, Marcie is here" just as Mary came up behind Adam. Mary said "So this is the beautiful, young lady you have hooked around your arm." Marcie stood there with a big smile on her face saying "Awe, thank you mum. You are the sweetest." Mary said "Now, now come along dearie, lets get that plate and bottle of Wine set down on the table" and Marcie said "Mum and sweetheart, I may as well break the secret early... I bake and that right there on the plate is a Pumpkin Pie.". With that they all went inside.
While Adam was carving up the turkey, Mary set the table and Marcie went into the kitchen to wash her hands for dinner.
Just as Adam finished carving the turkey Mary went to get Billy from his bedroom. When Mary came back to the dining room with Billy, she found Adam and Marcie sitting at the table waiting for them and Mary sat down and said "Marcie I think since you are our guest you should say grace before we eat." So Marcie said her traditional Catholic grace "Bless us O Lord, in these thy gifts which we are about to receive from thy bounty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen."
