Chapter one

Joe:

“Honestly, you guys have to meet Lay-Lou!” Merie exclaims. I turn to Merie, her thick dark hair bouncing around her shoulders as the wind blows. Her dark almond eyes sparkle; lighting up her face, making it obvious this means a lot to her. After all, she hadn’t been able to shut up about this “Lay-Lou” moving to town for weeks. Suki grimaces “I’ll pass” she says, awkwardly fiddling with her long, practically Rapunzel length hair so it hides her face. Suki will avoid strangers by any means necessary. “Seriously, she’s the most amazing person you’ll ever meet!” cries Merie desperately. Suki gives her a brief, somewhat offended look, and turns to her phone, sensing an argument. “To be honest, I don’t want to meet someone who knows all about me and our relationship when all I know is her name and that apparently we’re going to be neighbors!” I snap at her.

“Why are you being like this? She’s just a friend who’s going to be pretty lonely, and I think we could help her out!”

Suki sighs “she’s going to win, Joe, this is Merie, just do what she wants, and this walk will involve a lot less screaming and death threats, which frankly would make a pleasant change!” Merie smiles at her like she’s been complimented. “Fine… Whatever. I’ll meet her.” I say, admitting defeat.

“Thank you” says Merie smugly “that’s all I wanted!” I scowl and switch sides so I’m walking next to Suki, who gives me a sympathetic smile but stays out of the argument. It seems better to the alternative of snapping my girlfriend’s neck as she cheerily walks through the park back from school. Merie immediately intercepts, and squeezes between us. I quickly decide there’s no point in fighting, and wrap my arm round her slim waist. But there was still no way in hell I was meeting this girl.  “So, what’re you guys doing this weekend?” asks Suki, changing the subject. “Oh, Joey’s sleep round mine, aren’t you baby?” she says affectionately.

Ooh Joey, baby!” Suki silently mocks me behind Merie’s back.

“I am actually, what’s the lone queen of prudery going to be up to?” I ask her cheerfully.Merie smirks; she likes being reminded of her superior relationship status to Suki.

“Not losing my virginity to a prick like you, Joey baby!” Suki brightly announces. Merie spits her drink out.

“I don’t bloody think so!” she gasps.

We all giggle, and stop murdering each other long enough to enjoy the rest of the afternoon.

Once Suki has taken Merie’s immensely subtle hints and left, we turn round the corner towards Merie’s house. Merie’s house is beautiful; it’s coloured white and mint green, with ivory spiraling round the pillars. Merie’s house is one of the best in the town; her family could afford it seeing as her parents were lawyers. However, Merie isn’t spoilt, far from it. She never says much about her home life, but judging by the way her normally bright eyes cloud over whenever she spoke about her family, it was far from idyllic. I wouldn’t know though, she only allows me to come over when she knew none of her family would be in. I’ve only met her younger brother and sister, Nina and Antonio, a few times, when she was stuck looking after them. However, I didn’t mind, meeting her parents isn’t something I’m looking forward to. I’ve heard her talk to her dad on the phone; even though she was talking in Italian he sounded pretty scary to me.
