It was 5 miles to the drop zone and 7 out they were the longest 12 miles ever, usually consisting of flak and fighters. All of the sudden we heard the worst thing ever the lead bomber Wolf Pack's pilot came on "We have to turn back we just lost our 2 main engines and the bubble and we can't get him out. We will see y'all at the ba..." He was about to say base when BOOMM a huge fireball consumed the plane. "OH CRAP!" Yelled one of the planes pilots. Wolf Pack was about to be the second plane ever to fly 25 missions without a scratch...now well it's proof that the Germans can and will kill you or anyone no matter how skilled. Jim came on the radio. "Beautiful Ridge will take over as lead bomber." Beautiful Ridge was our bombers name because we are from Roanoke. "Jim are you crazy?! This is our third mission!" I cried out. "Relax Robert we'll be fine we are half a mile from the drop zone."
Then Jim switched control to Winston who sighted in on the yards and he pressed the button releasing the bombs and a minute later faint explosions could be heard and little orange specks were all over the ground followed by black smoke. We had hit our target and were heading home!
I guess you can figure out we made it home for I wouldn't be writing you this letter. Out of the 70 airplanes that went up 30 came back and 5 crash landed. It is the 3rd of April 1945 they say the war could be over at anytime but I'm am looking forward to returning home to my beloved family. Love your son Robert.
"Robert come on we can't leave the ladies waiting for the dance now can?" Austin yelled in our barracks. "No sir we can't do that!" I replied with a slight chuckle. Austin was always the ladies man of the group and I mean always but tonight I intend on being in the spot light. I raced out to our jeep. It took 2 jeeps to get all 10 of us there but we were all excited.
