The town of Applewood was busier then usual. With preparations for the annual monster hunt, everyone had something to do.
Everyone that is, besides the Monster Tamers.
The Tamers hid away in their homes, boarding up windows and doors, and going down to their basements. Most basements had enough food and water to last a week, though the hunt only lasted a day, and one or more beds, as well as many large, sharp weapons, and deadly magical traps.
Monster Tamers were not aloud to tame the beast on the day of the hunt, for it would cause trouble for the hunters who limited the population of monsters, and made their living off of the hide. But Monster Hunters would often run the beasts through town, and the monsters were drawn to the Tamers. Staying hidden made the hunt much easier.
But there were a few, who hated hiding.
Adeline sat up on a roof, her older brother Andrew, and her friend Izzy sitting on either side of her. They watched as hunters readied their weapons and set up traps, Adeline and Andrew looking on with disappointment, while Izzy watched in wonder and amazement.
"I wonder what kind of metal they're usin' for the traps!" Izzy half whispered, half shouted, leaning forward while clinging to the edge of the roof. Adeline and her brother shrugged, but Adeline turned to face Izzy, "Why should we care? We aren't hunters. We're Tamers." She said. Izzy looked at her with large eyes, "So? We can still wonder, can't we?"
Shrugging, Adeline smiled, "I guess. Just don't let your father hear that!"
Andre huffed and looked at them through the corner of his eye, "A tamer shouldn't care what a trap is made of
As long as a monster isn't trapped in it." Adeline rolled her eyes, "Buzzkill..."
As the Hunters set up Barrie's in front of homes and shops, Andrew started to stand, "Big brother, sit down! The hunt isn't starting yet!" Said Adeline, tugging on her brother's sleeve. Andrew shuck his head, "If we don't leave now, mother and father will get worried."
After a moment, Adeline groaned and stud, "Fine! But I'm taking Izzy home first!" Before her brother could argue, Adeline yanked Izzy up by the wrist and flung her onto her back. Izzy was much small then Ade, though they were only a year apart. Getting a running start, Adeline shot forward, sprinting to the edge of the roof, and leaping off.
There was a soft thud as they landed, Ade's feet sending up tiny shards of stone. Barely stopping, Adeline took off again, kicking up the shingles on the roof.
Izzy squealed and clung tightly around Ade's neck, laughing loudly. Behind them, Andrew followed close, his feet leaving indents on the roof, "Adeline! Get back here! This isn't safe at all!"
Leaping over to another roof, Adeline glanced behind her, and smiled, "Come on, big brother!" She called, "You're faster then that!" Jumping to a different roof, Ade turned sideways, her feet pushing up the stones shingles, then leapt down, into an ally.
As Izzy slide off her back, Andrew landed beside them, "You shouldn't do stuff like that!" That was insanely dangerous!" He began, sounding like he was about to go off on a rant, when the sound of a horn went off. All three of them turned to face the main road. The hunt was starting
