Carla never expected it to happen.

Looking back, it had almost felt like some strange dream, hazy around the edges. It was one of those strange, wonderfully inexplicable things, a rare occurrence, and she didn't realize how special it was until much later.

It all happened by chance, of course. How could she have ever predicted that, stepping out into a crowded street in the middle of winter, she would trip?

But as she stepped off the sidewalk, her foot slipped in a dirty puddle of slushy snow, and she felt herself go weightless. Almost as if in slow motion, she squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for impact.

But she never hit the ground. Something a bit peculiar happened instead.

Carla found herself staring up into a pair of rather pretty brown eyes, which were wide with shock. Their faces were mere centimeters apart, so close that they were practically nose-to-nose. One arm was wrapped around her waist. The woman's body was warm against hers, contrasting the December chill.

Carla felt frozen, locked in place, as if time itself had screeched to a halt. She was acutely aware of the feeling of the stranger's fingers pressed against her spine. Maybe it was just the blood rushing to her head (and to her face), but she couldn't help but notice the tiny glittering snowflakes caught in the woman's lashes, the way her wavy hair tumbled over her shoulders like a chocolate brown waterfall, the curve of her shapely lips–

A man strolling by with his wife flashed the pair of them a knowing grin as he called, "So when's the wedding, eh?"

It was this that startled Carla out of her trance, and she quickly scrambled to stand. The woman helped her to her feet, simultaneously snapping her head around to shoot a death glare towards the man's receding back.

Carla frantically stammered an apology as she straightened out her rumpled winter coat, her cheeks flaming even in the cold.

"Lo siento–I-I'm so sorry! I didn't–"

"Está bien, querida. Good thing I was there to catch you, si?" The woman gave her a kind, gentle smile, almost as if she could sense her nervousness, and her heart flip-flopped in her chest.

"S-Si...gracias."

Then the awkwardness ensued. Carla simply stood there, arms hanging uselessly at her sides, wanting to say something else but not knowing what.

Come on, come on, think of something...

"Y-You have...very nice eyes," Carla blurted suddenly, not quite sure what on Earth had come over her. Her blush only grew worse as the stranger shot her a quizzical glance, one eyebrow arched in the most attractive way possible. Ay, caramba. "I-I mean...I just couldn't help but notice...when..."

She trailed off, burying her face in her hands.

Oh, God, she'll hate me now. She probably thinks I'm such a creep–

"What's your name, chica?"

Carla was pulled back to reality with a start. She timidly raised her head once more, blinking in surprise. "Wh-What?"

"Your name," the woman repeated.

"Oh...C-Carla. And you...?"

The stranger reached forward and gripped Carla's hand firmly, sending tingles up her arm and setting the flurry of butterflies in her stomach into a frenzy once more.

"Daniela. My name is Daniela."
