(Chapter One)

My bag is hanging on my right shoulder as I enter the doors and walk on the hallways of Midtown Science High School. I wear a tan oversized long-sleeved shirt, a pair of dark blue jeans, a pair of black Converse and a dark purple beanie over my shoulder length raven-black hair; my usual style. I adjust my glasses and continue on walking. As I make my way to my locker, I see a guy putting up a photo of the debate team on the bulletin board of the champions. I get a bit excited since Gwen's on the debate team and I can't wait to tell her about this.

All of a sudden, a basketball comes hitting the guy on the head and my head automatically turns to where the ball came from. I realize him. Flash Thompson, the guy who Gwen tutors at our house. He laughs along with his friends and says, "I’m sorry," but he continues on laughing.

"Morning, Flash," says the guy who Flash just threw a ball at as he closes the bulletin board. He sounded a bit irritated.

Flash walks towards him and his friends as he says, "Good morning, Parker." Then, he attempts to attack him and the guy backs up. Then, they walk off as they laugh

Bullies. I roll my eyes at the thought.

I start walking again to my locker. When I get there, I see a couple two lockers away from mine, chewing each other’s lips off as if there's no tomorrow. I flinch in disgust. Why the heck do they even have to chew each other off in public, much more in a school? So much for public display of affection. There are lots of places to do that, like the bedroom, just in case they're going to go all the way. And there's a janitor's closet, for crying out loud.

I shake my head and open my locker. I take out my Science book and notebook. As I close my locker, the guy from the bulletin board, who Flash has called 'Parker', arrives and he has his skateboard buckled on his backpack. He tries to open his locker, which is being leaned on by the kissers. I could see him struggling. Poor guy.

I start to make my way outside to the lunch tables to meet Gwen. I see her sitting on a table with her legs hanging on the edge, reading a book. She has her hair on a ponytail with a black headband on and her bangs are neatly comb on her forehead. She’s wearing a beige jacket over a black collared shirt, a gray mini skirt, and a pair of black boots over gray socks. As always, she looks pretty.

Someone from where I came from walks in front of me and it is Parker. I think he didn't notice me, obviously. He takes a look at Gwen and takes a picture of her with his DLR camera. I didn't know people still use DLR cameras nowadays.

I cross my arms and crease my eyebrows interestingly. Somebody has a crush on my cousin. Well, what guy wouldn't have a crush on her? She's pretty and smart and nice and she's very sweet. But I'm still her, kind of, body guard when it comes to those.

"Hey, Gwen!" I greet as I lightly wave. Parker quickly drops his camera and looks around like nothing happened. I lightly chuckle and walk towards Gwen.

She looks over and grins. "Hey, Roe!" Then she moves side wards a bit, giving me space to sit on.

I crunch my nose and sit on the bench by the table and get a glimpse of the book she’s reading; Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. "So, how’s the book?" I ask as I lay my bag on my thighs and lean my arms on the table.

"It’s great. I love it so far. You should read this sometime."

I nod. "Of course." I open my bag and take out my notebook and pen and lay them on the table. "I just still haven't finish my Science homework."

"Ugh, Roe," she moans. "I told you to do well on your classes, especially Science."

I give a chuckle. "Relax. You know I do great. And besides, I can finish this in no time," I say, trying to sound less cocky.
