Selena stared at the portal beneath her feet. Dressed in jeans and t-shirt, she held her cat, Jade, securely in her arms. A necklace around her neck had three pendants-an ankh, a hexagon with a triangle and a crystal set inside it, and a blue lace agate. All three were made with silver, and all three shone with power. The portal beneath her feet glowed brightly as she lifted her gaze to look at the woman standing before her.
"Goodbye, Marian. Take care while I'm gone." She smiled, trying to conceal her nerves from the other woman.
Marian sighed, not fooled in the slightest. "Take care of yourself, Princess. Remember what I said-you're wearing far too many clothes for a woman of your status."
Selena laughed. "Marian, no-one there knows who or what I am, and I plan to keep it that way, too. Good luck with the Generals-you're going to need it." The portal began to glow even more brightly as she began to sink into it, and Marian wiped a tear away from her face.
"Selena, don't forget-you have three years there before you can return!"
"I won't, Marian! Goodbye!" With that, Selena disappeared from the older woman's sight, leaving her in the portal room with a now-dull portal. With a sigh, Marian turned away. She would have to face the Council of Generals over this, but there was nothing she or they could do-Princess Selena had always been impetuously stubborn, and had grown more so as she had grown up. Now twenty one years old, Selena had wanted to see more of life-and had decided to go to the Human World to do so.
"Stay safe, Selena. We will all miss you." Turning away from the portal, Marian began to put her memories of the young woman in a place where they would be safe until Selena's return...
