Meet me at the train station in 3 hours.

Bring your bag, we've got a case!

William grinned at the smartphone his hand. Only Kay could get so excited about a crime. She was definitely spontaneous, though sometimes to the point of becoming a danger to herself and anyone who had the misfortune of being too close. Sometimes Will feared that she really had lost her mind. He shook his head. It didn't matter if he wanted to be there or not, he couldn't possibly leave her alone. If there was one thing that the last 3 years had taught him it was that Kay imploded in the face of loneliness.

With a sigh and a low chuckle William got to his feet. He headed for his room, passing his landlady in the hallway.

"Hello Mrs.O'Neill, Having a nice day?" William stopped to greet the older woman. She turned from the plant she was watering and gave him a sweet smile.

"Of course dear. How are you?" Mrs.O'Neill sounded like every loving mother ever, despite her constant reminders to William that she was not, in fact, his mother. William shook his head, again. He did that often, didn't he? He made a mental note to stop shaking his head.

"I'm well." William's short response was met with a curt nod. Mrs. O'Neill returned to her watering, signaling that the conversation was over. William turned away, throwing one last sentence over his shoulder, "I'm going a way for a bit." William didn't stop for a response, he simply ran the rest of the way down the hall until he reached his dark oak door. He yanked the door open, slamming behind him. This earned him a gasp and a quiet "how rude." from Mrs. O'Neill.

William made his way through the cluttered apartment to his bedroom. Papers littered his bed. He swept them away to make room for his bag, letting them tumble and float to the floor. One piece of paper in particular caught his eye. It was a newspaper, printed yesterday. The headline read "VIRGINIAN GIRL FOUND DEAD IN HER HOME - BELIEVED SUICIDE" and below it sat a picture of a young girl, 17 or so, with her arm wrapped around none other than Kay. He'd never admit it but Will's breath caught the moment he saw the paper snd his heart skipped 3 beats when he decided it most definitely was Kay in the picture. He yanked his phone out of his pocket and snapped a picture of the newspaper with a shaking hand. desperately trying to still his arm, William typed a hasty message to his best friend.

Please tell me that this doesn't have anything to do with our case.

-W

William ran a hand through his brown curls. Kay better have had a good reason for this.

I'll explain on the train.
-K

Three years of their awkwardly marked text messages and Williams adrenaline fueled eyes still read it as "I'll explain on the train k?". William actually yelled "No, no it is not okay!" Before he caught himself.

No, tell me now or I'm not coming.

-W

Harsh, yes, but also a lie. William knew that no matter what he said he wouldn't be able to leave Kay alone when she needed him.

Please William.
This isn't something I can say over text.
-K

No, he wouldn't bend this time. He wasn't going anywhere until he found out what was going on.

No, tell me now or don't tell me at all .

You promised no more murder cases.

- W

Even as he typed William began to pull his pre-packed duffel bag out from under his bed.

The girl who was with me in the picture, the one who was murdered, she's my sister.
-K

William froze. He hadn't expected that one. Though, he never really expected anything that Kay said. Will had never actually met Kay's sister. He knew her only from the fond way Kay spoke of her.

I'm so sorry Kay.

I'll see you in a few hours.

-W

William ran a hand over his face. This was a mess. Kay was charging into unknown territory without stopping to check for traps. She had old friends in the NYPD that allowed her to work on her cases here, but the police in other states would not be so inclined. As far as anyone there cared Kay was just a lying ex-cop who got her nose stuck in other peoples business. and William was her just lap dog. Will turned and flopped onto his bed.
