There was something about the first taste of freshly brewed coffee. I welcomed the smell and the reminder of home it brought along with it. Soon after came the bitterness of starting school in a new town. Maybe it would have been easier if I were starting at the beginning of the year but classes had started almost two months ago.

"Good morning, honey." Mom said as she walked in the kitchen and went straight for the coffee pot.

"Don't assume it's a good morning." I narrowed my eyes at her. "Because of you I'm going to have the biggest humiliation of my life."

I had to go through the pain of being the new kid. I wouldn't know where any of my classes were or who I would have to sit with during my lunch period. Just thinking about it gave me anxiety.

"Blaire, you won't be alone and you only have three days. You're lucky I didn't have you start Monday when we got here." She said. "Besides, Freya is going to be with you."

I pulled a face. Mom signed me up for school on Monday and when I ran into Freya during passing periods she acted as though we didn't know each other. It wasn't like I actually approached her but she ignored my entire existence.

"Some help she'll be." I muttered.

"Try to adjust, Blaire. I know this is hard for you but-"

"Hard for me? You have no idea. My grandmother died and I never got to meet her. Now I have an aunt and a cousin? To top it off I have to move to this crappy town. It's more than hard for me."

"Blaire-"

"Just...don't. I'll be back later."

"Don't tell me you're walking to school." Mom called out.

I would rather walk across the country than spend alone time with my mom in a car with Freya in the back seat. It was bad enough that we had to live in the same house. I could do with skipping out on the family bonding time.

The school wasn't so far. It was easier if I cut through the cemetery nearby. The only reason I knew that was because I could see it from the view in my room. The route we took to school on Monday was short but I remembered the way.

A car honked at me as it sped past me. It was Freya and the friend she had left with when I arrived to Whisper Falls. I rolled my eyes and continued walking down the sidewalk. The cemetery was about four blocks away. I still had time to get to school.

I grew closer to the cemetery and saw that the iron gates were closed. Chains wrapped around the bars to keep people away during closing time. I pulled on the gates trying to see exactly how tight the chains were holding the gate together. There was enough space for a small person to squeeze through.

I pushed my bag through the opening and I followed next. It was a tight squeeze but I easily slipped through. I wondered if it was going to be like that every day going to school. I would take that over spending time in the car with my mom.

As I walked I noticed how odd the cemetery was. The burials were above ground making it look like small houses. There were some that had dates dated centuries back. It was cool and creepy at the same time. I could tell how much work was put into them, some more than others.

I still had a two blocks to walk when I got out the cemetery. It led through a small wooded area the faced the front of the school. As I got closer I could hear the loud chatter of students. When the school came into view it was crowded in front.

A few people starred at me as I passed by. I went straight to the main office to get the rest of the books I needed for my classes and my locker combination. It took longer than I had expected due to the morning rush of students.
