The warmth of the hot cappuccino spread through my mitten covered hands as I sat on a bench outside Starbucks, waiting for Nathan to pick me up. I had been waiting for him in the cold for the past half an hour. He had said that he would be here within five minutes but he hadn’t come. I called him a few times but he didn’t pick up his cellphone, so finally I decided to leave for the apartment on my own. With coffee in my hand, I hailed a cab and gave the driver the address of the apartment which we both shared.
Nathan and I had met at my friend Dan’s Thanksgiving party two years back. Even though we both were in the same college, I never knew him before then. Dan introduced us and we talked for hours and hours. There was an instant connection between us, a fierce electricity that neither of us could deny. Our friends thought that we were in a relationship even though we were still in the ‘friends’ stage, but we didn’t disappoint them as a month after our knowing of each other, he kissed me under the fireworks as the countdown for the New Year’s to arrive ended and asked me to be his girlfriend.
Everything was perfect, he graduated from college that year and got a job in a marketing company. The next year I graduated and started working at a publishing house as a copywriter. We both were happy with our jobs, even though it demanded a lot of dedication and hard work, we still took out time from our busy schedules for each other. A few months earlier we rented an apartment with two of our common friends in Manhattan and started living together. Life was perfect as it could get.
But I guess, my fairytale had to end at sometime. When everyone was asking us that what were we going to do for our third anniversary as a couple this year, I looked at Nathan, in the hopes that he would have thought of something great, but I got no response. His eyes didn’t show any excitement. I was a tad bit disappointed but I shrugged it off, thinking he must be tired.
Since then, it has been going on like this. All I have been getting are dry responses, irritated looks and calls going straight to voice mail. He would leave for work before I got up and arrive home after I had gone to sleep. Not seeing him for days became a routine. Somewhere I felt that what we had built up two years back was not there anymore, our love had died in this busy life. Someone had to say something before it all went downhill and we started hating each other. Someone had to put an end to it.
As I made my way up the stairs, towards our apartment, I had a queasy feeling in my chest. I rang the bell and Noelle opened the door.
“Hey, I was just leaving. I thought that you and Nate were coming together. Where is he?” Noelle enquired.
“I don’t know where he is.” I shrugged and went inside my room.
I heard the front door shut, which meant that I was the only one in here. It was a good thing as I would not be bombarded with questions as to why I locked my room. I was both emotionally and physically tired and the moment I laid my head on the pillow, I fell into a deep sleep.
I woke up around eight in the evening with no sign of Nathan. As I got up and drank some coffee, there was a sound of the doorknob twisting and there entered a slightly tipsy Nathan.
