foundation is a coloured base for all the rest of your makeup. You can buy light-full coverage foundations so long as they are your skin colour.
If you're using a drugstore branded foundation, get a shade lighter because if you wear a foundation that matches you perfectly, it will oxidize at the end of the day and you'll look grey toned, ashy and dull. So get a shade lighter/ half a shade lighter. But if you're using a high end brand of foundation then you can wear one that matches you perfectly.

If you want less of a cakier look, you don't have to use foundation. You can use BB cream instead.
I prefer using a BB cream or powder foundation so it doesn't look too cakey.

When I do use foundation I use the MAC Studio Fix Fluid. It has a matte finish. They colour matched me and I was NC35 but that was before I went to Turkey, and I'm waiting for my tan to go down so I can wear it again :( And before I got that, I was slightly more tan so I used Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation (i think that's what it's called) in shade 400 i think it's Natural Beige. I think it also has a matte finish but idk because I haven't used it in ages.
My skin colour varies often nowadays it's weird. So sometimes my NC35 does match me sometimes it doesn't. But I also mix both foundations together.

If you wear liquid foundation, use a beauty blender to blend it in, because if you use a brush, it'll be streaky and won't blend good. Unless you use a dense stippling Kabuki brush. For powder foundation, use a normal stippling brush and do it lightly in circular motions. for BB cream you can use your hands if you like.
