The promise...both Tyler and Josh made a promise. The promise entailed that they would always stay alive for each other. This meant nothing could end up like the original tale of Romeo and Juliet. They wouldn't let anything come to it. Although Tyler felt it was coming down to Romeo and Montague instead. Romeo dies, and Montague just stays...grieving over his best friend's death...
Well, fast forward some years of therapy, suffering, and suicidal attempts, and here we are in the same place we were at the beginning of this novel. Tyler stopped screaming. His heart was slowing, and he felt dizzy. But he withstood all of these feelings. The rain stopped and Tyler slid down the branch and grasped his last hope of closure. The only thing that he believed would help him now. He still, however, held the ukulele in his hands by the neck of it. It was a little hard to put a necklace around his neck while holding it, but he managed it well.
As soon as the necklace was hooked, he held the instrument in hand...
And jumped down from the tree...
His throat lodged backwards in his neck and he felt the asphyxiation go to work quickly. He choked, but held back his gasps for air because he didn't want air, he wanted death. And that was what he got. Within thirty seconds, he got just what he had wished and pleaded for.
Death.
The instrument eventually slipped from his grasp and laid on the grass, back facing down. This instrument was another aspect of Tyler's memories. This was the same ukulele he played in lieu with the eight different songs he had written for Josh. He loved it when every time he finished the song for Josh, Josh would applaud him and smile so widely. Tyler had been living for that smile ever since he met him. He hoped to god he'd be able to see it again.
And so, with that last flashing thought, Tyler Robert Joseph was found by authorities deceased due to asphyxiation by rope. A succeeding suicidal attempt. On the very same day he met Josh, was proposed to, and when he lost Josh to a couple gunshot wounds by a homophobic activist.
