Manhattan, New York

The people on the busy New York street pushed and shoved, ready to make their commute to work. I, on the other hand, had woken up late once again and had to skip breakfast. I knew that I wouldn't have time to eat before class, and so I ran inside the small corner store and grabbed a orange juice and a granola bar. I rushed to the counter and rummaged through my large bag for my debit card.

"Running late again?" the cute, 6'2 light skinned man behind the counter asked.

He was always trying to strike up a conversation with me. He even talked to me when I got back to my apartment.

Did I mention he lived six doors down from me?

I answered a quick, "Yeah", and paid the man. There was something special about him, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. On days when I wasn't rushing, we managed to have some nice conversations. His smile was amazing, and he had dimples, my favorite feature. He handed me the bagged items and I rushed out of the store heading straight for campus.. After fast-walking for seven minutes straight, I saw the large building come into view. On the side of the building, red illuminated words: The Art Institute of New York.

As soon as I arrived in my classroom in the fashion department, I went into my designated locker area, so I could sit down my belongings. I could her my professor in the next room going over the schedule for the busy day. The institute was having a large play, and it was up to the fashion department to design the clothes. I walked into the large room full of other young designers, such as myself.

"Miss Williams, you are late. Again", my director, Mr. Thompson pointed out.

"I know, I promise I won't be late again, sir."

He went back to talking, and I went and took a seat next to my new friend, Lyra, an African foreign exchange student.

"Why are you always so late?" she whispered, so Mr. Thompson wouldn't notice.

"I had overslept, I know I must look like shit now" I yawned, "I didn't have any time to get ready."

After Mr. Thompson finished his lecture, we all went down to the area to our work stations. Lyra and I sat at our tables, and continued sewing the dresses.

"So what's going on with you and Jameel?" I inquired.

"The usual, we're still trying to work out the long-distance relationship thing" she explained.

"What going on with you and corner-store boy?" she joked.

I rolled my eyes. "I'm not interested. He's cute and all but I doubt we have anything in common."
