The next morning, I was sitting in a chair facing eleven other boys. I had been waken up to only to be told that the Keepers were having a Gathering and I was needed, more like demanded, to be there.
We all sat in a large room of the Homestead that I hadn't known was here. The room was really big. There were no windows, only chairs and one table filled the room. Plus it smell like old books in a library. Everyone looked intimidating except for Newt.
"In place of our leader, sick in bed, I declare this Gathering begun," he said, rolling his eyes as if he hated being formal. "As you all know, the last few days have been bloody crazy, and quite a bit seems centered around our two Greenbean, Tommy and Makena."
"They're not the Greenies anymore," A older boy said with crazy eyebrows, his scratchy voice so low and cruel it was almost comical. " They are rule breakers now."
The room filled with silent murmurs."Gally," Newt said, "try to keep some buggin' order in here. If you're gonna keep yappin' your mouth when I say something about the Greenies, you can get the shuck out because I'm not in the greatest of moods."
The Gally guy folded his arms and leaned back in his chair with a scowl on his face. Newt gave Gally a hard stare before continuing the Gathering. "Glad we got that out of the way. Reason we are here is because almost every single one of ya in the Glade has come up to me in the last day or two either boohooing about Thomas or beggin' to take Makena's bloody hand in marriage. So in that case we need to know what we're gonna do with em."
I almost wanted to laugh at the fact that guys were asking my hand in marriage all because I survived frm the maze. To me it was a silly thought. Gally leaned forward, but Newt cut him off before he could say anything.
"You'll get your chance to speak, Gally. Tommy and Makena you two are not allowed to say a bloody thing. Not one word till we ask you. Good that?" I frowned. I looked over at Thomas and then back to Newt, reluctantly nodding my head. He waited for Thomas to do the same and then pointed to the kid in the chair on the far right. "Zart the Fart, you start."
People began to snicker at the nickname. I looked over to Zart and gave him apologetic smile. He was a nice guy and we talked in the garden. Sure he looked more out of place the us but he was still a nice guy overall.
"Well," Zart began, " The two did break one of our most important rules we have here in the Glade. We can't just let it go without some punishment otherwise people will start to think it'll be okay."I don't know. He broke one of our most important rules. We can't just let people think that's okay." He paused. "But then again, they changed things. We know we can survive out there now. That we can beat the Grievers."
This is good. I thought to myself. We have at least one person on our side...
"Oh, give me a break," Gally spurted. "I bet Minho's the one who actually got rid of the stupid things."
"Gally, shut your hole!" Newt yelled, standing up. "I'm the one in charge right now, and if I hear one more buggin' word from you, I'll be arrangin' a second Banishing for you."
Gally rolled his eyes and slouched back into his seat.
Newt sat down. "Is that it Zart? Anything else?"
Zart shook his head.
"Alright. Frypan, your turn."
I looked over at the dark skinned boy who already had a full beard in the glade smiling. "Those two shank's got more guts than anyone else I know." He paused for a few moments before finishing. "This whole thing is stupid. They saved Alby's life, killed some Grievers, and here we all are sitting here figuring out what the shuck we're gona do with em."
