"Do we seriously have to do this? I told you guys to not make a hassle out of it," Veronica whined.
"Are you serious? Not even a single dinner with your friends is okay with you? Yeesh, stop complaining sweetheart," Nina nonchalantly replied as she took a smooth right turn on the road.
Veronica nervously twirled a small brown curl with her finger and stared out the window with uncertainty. "Nina, I'm certainly quite dressed up for a small dinner."
"Relax, V! No better time to get dolled up then on your birthday. Plus, you know I did a good job on you. Makeup has never looked more perfect on someone!" Nina turned her head slightly and winked. "Now relax, and have fun."
Veronica smoothed out her red silk dress as she stepped out of the convertible and onto the concrete. Fixing her small purse strap over her shoulder one last time, she caught up with Nina as best she could with her blood red heels and soon, they reached the door.
"You look beautiful. We'll have tons of fun today, don't worry," Nina assured her. She slowly opened the door to the seemingly dark and quiet house.
A little too dark and quiet.
All of a sudden, lights flashed on and streamers of every color were thrown everywhere.
"SURPRISE!!!"
Veronica's eyes widened as she scanned the room. All her friends were there, just as she wished.
She raised her hands to her lips as she gasped and smiled widely.
"Happy birthday, VV!!" Zayla smiled, another friend.
"You guys, you can't be serious right now!" Veronica exclaimed, the shocked look on her face glued as people captured the moment with their cellphones. She slightly hit Nina's elbow for lying so well and started laughing.
"V! My god, you look stunning!" Maira yelled as she ran towards her and gave her a rushed hug, careful not to ruin her carefully made bouncy hair.
"Thank you! Was this all your idea?"
"Well, of course. But Nina and Zayla tuned in a lot," she grinned.
"Shut up! It was all equally our idea. Leave it up to Maira to take credit for everything," Nina rolled hereyes as a sigh escaped her rosy red lips. Zayla only chuckled at the side.
"Now, now, enough bickering! Let's get this party started!" Zayla bellowed so that everyone in the room could hear. Everyone else cheered in unison and loud music instantly started playing through the stereo speakers. Veronica once again let out a giggle before joining her friends on the dance floor.
A hand grabbed Veronica's shoulder. She realized it was Maira with an angry look on her face.
"I'll be back, V. Some drunk douche dropped his drink on my dress. Zayla and Nina are helping me upstairs. Be back in a flash!" The words quickly left Maira's mouth as following that she ran upstairs, her other friends waiting for her.
Man, this is such a drag without them, she thought. All of her friends were talking with one another and some were already drop dead drunk. She then realized that a lot of people in the room she didn't even recognize. Just friends of friends or barely acquaintances in her college community. She slightly swished around the Orange punch in her bright red solo cup while staring off into space, nothing a mysterious corner of the penthouse main floor covered with a navy blue curtain.
Suddenly, her eyes were gently covered with two warm hands. The mystery man brought his face closer to his ear and gently whispered, "guess who?"
