Emmy Ramirez is seventeen, but she takes on a lot more than the average twenty five year old. The rental home that she lives in is basically falling apart, and she and her siblings live paycheck to paycheck, quite literally. With a deceased father and a mother who only shows up every once in a while to pop out another baby, no one can fathom how Emmy has the ability to take care of six younger siblings, go to school, and work. After working hard for most of her junior year, she finally gains a scholarship to McClinton Academy, the most prestigious private school in her state. Managing her mornings becomes a whole lot tougher. With less and less time for her two best friends Joss and Iggy, will Emmy lose sight of what's important?
Tyler Rogers has always been privileged. He's the son of the infamous Dr. George Rogers. The huge mansion that he shares with his sister, divorced parents, and maid almost always seems empty. When Tyler's mother announces her move to Australia with her boyfriend Spencer, Tyler's father takes the opportunity to announce that he's been seeing someone secretly for the past four months, and is planning to propose. On top of all this, Tyler makes a bet with his friend Carter: whichever guy can have sex with Emmy Ramirez first gets to give the other a full body wax. Tyler develops an unexpected relationship with Emmy, will his and Carter's bet blow up in his face?

Emmy glared at her mother. "Why can't I go?" she demanded once again. "It's so unfair!"
"Emmy, cara," said Emmy's father as he entered the room. "Please try to understand. You're a big girl now, yeah? And Kathy's here." He stepped aside to reveal Kathy Harris, who was Emmy and Sammy's next door neighbor and unpaid babysitter.
"I'll come home early and bring you some cheesecake. I promise," he told her as he led Emmy's mother out the front door of their one story apartment.
Though Emmy was only four, she understood that her family was poor. It wasn't hard to tell by looking at their apartment, but they got by. Going to the movies was a luxury that her parents rarely got, and Emmy knew that. But it didn't change the fact that she wanted to go.
"I love you, Emmy," her father called.
Emmy didn't answer. He sighed and closed the door.
She looked down at Sammy, who was looking up at her with his big brown eyes.
"I'll say sorry later."
Emmy wandered over to the couch and she and Kathy watched a movie as Sammy drifted to sleep. Soon enough, Emmy was asleep beside her brother.
A few hours later, Kathy shook Emmy and Sammy awake.
"We need to go, honey," Kathy said urgently, her eyes wide with panic.
Kathy drove Emmy and Sammy to the ER at Birchwood General Hospital, where both Emmy's parents were undergoing surgery. A car accident, apparently. Emmy's father had been speeding to get home when his car lost control and was basically crushed by a Walmart delivery truck.
Her mother was out a few minutes after they arrived. She'd be fine, the doctor said.
"I'm sorry," the doctor said to Emmy as he sat down beside her. "But we lost your father."
Emmy looked up at him, perplexed. "That's okay. I used to lose him a lot. His favorite hiding spot is in the closet. I'll help you look if you want."
The doctor smiled kindly at her. "Not like that, Emmy. Your dad died during surgery."
Emmy stared at him. Then she couldn't hold it in.
She stood and kicked at the magazines that were neatly arranged on the coffee table. "I was kidding! Tell Daddy that I was kidding! Tell him I love him and I'm sorry for being mean! Do it!"
Emmy was screaming and crying at the same time. Kathy set Sammy down on a chair and attempted to pick up Emmy.
"No!" she screamed. "I want Daddy! He promised he would bring home dessert! He promised!
Emmy screamed her throat raw. Suddenly her stomach convulsed and she vomited all over the floor.
"Oh, Emmy," Kathy murmured as she engulfed Emmy in a hug. "I'm so sorry, baby. I'm so so sorry."
