I waited for everybody to file out of the band room before heading to Mr. S’ office. I sat down in the chair in front of his desk and waited for him to say something about the practice. He glanced at me for a second and then looked back to his computer screen, typing quickly.

“I’ll be with you in just a moment Tabbi. I just have to finish this email.” I nodded and studied the various things around his office. I was staring at a motivational poster and thinking how it was cheesy, when Ace poked his head into the office.

“Yo Tabbi. Are you getting a ride with me or what?” I looked at him and thought for a second. Grey said he wanted to get coffee with me after practice. I looked around to the empty classroom, my eyes searching for Grey. Maybe he forgot about asking me out? I shrugged and met Ace’s eyes once again.

“Yeah, is that okay?” I asked biting my lip. Ace nodded and then said

“Yeah that’s fine. I’ll just wait out here.” He smiled slightly and left the room. I turned back to Mr. S. who was just watching the whole scene unfold in front of him.

“That boy likes you, you know.” He stated easily as he folded his hands under his chin easily. I immediately blushed and looked at him.

“He does NOT!” I said running a hand through my hair, embarrassed. “Why on Earth would you say that?!”

“I can just tell.” He stated and shrugged. “Anyway camp tonight went smoothly I think. The group has a lot of potential but they need a lot of work too.” I nodded in agreement.

“We will work tomorrow, during class as well as at camp.” I said Mr. S. agreed and I walked out of his office. I saw Ace sitting against the lockers, looking at his phone intently. I walked over to him and kicked his foot lightly. He grunted in response and looked up at me. “Ready?” I asked. He nodded and got to his feet easily.

As we were walking out of the classroom, Grey showed up and stopped us.

“So are we still on for coffee?” He asked politely, glancing at Ace quickly before turning his attention back to me. I bit my lip and looked to Ace. He was staring straight ahead waiting for my answer. Well it’s not like he’s going to mind right? He doesn’t care if I go with someone else. It’s one less stop he has to make.

But then I thought back to what Mr. S. had said. If that was true, then it would hurt him. But it wasn’t true. It couldn’t be true. He liked Madison. He hated me.

After thinking all of these things I finally looked at Grey and nodded. “Of course. Let’s go.” I said, slightly looking at Ace. His face was hard, yet I thought maybe I could see a small glimmer of disappointment, and jealousy in his eyes.

“See ya, Tabbi.” Ace said coldly and walked away.

“What’s his deal?” Grey said, looking at me. My eyes were looking into the dark at Ace’s retreating figure.

“I dunno.” I said, Mr. S’s words still echoing in my head.
