A Horcrux is a powerful object in which a witch or wizard can hide a part of his or her soul in order to gain immortality. Creating one Horcrux gives the caster ability to anchor their own soul to earth if the body is destroyed. The more Horcruxes someone creates, the closer they are to true immortality. Creating several Horcruxes is known to be costly to the creator, by both diminishing their humanity and even physically disfiguring them. Any object can be used as a Horcrux, even living organisms.
