The story begins with Harlem, she was your typical "weird girl". She had a plenty of friends, she had a plenty of dreams, and she had a caring heart. Her passion was not only writing but drawing as well she didn't care if she were assigned an essay she would have it on the teachers desk before the class was over with the characters sketched out on a completely different sheet of paper. She was the happiest of souls, she made everyone smile and laugh because she was always doing the same. No one ever bothered to ask about how she was doing or how her home life was though. Harlem was always so happy at school because that was her escape. None of her friends understood why she hated the summers nearing. Harlem went home every day to a drunken father who would do nothing but drown himself in alcohol and spew the most hateful things from his mouth. He didn't and couldn't work because he had a massive disability. He had gotten the disability after he had gotten into a bar fight, the other guys slammed his back into the counter breaking a part of his spine and rendering him useless to the work environment which after that he drank every day. He had the money from disability checks and he had his friend buy alcohol for him since he stayed sat in his chair. Every time summer would near Harlem would be uneasy and even scared at school so she didn't want summer to start she even enrolled herself in summer school once just so she would have more time away from home. What she didn't realize is that her doing that would come back and bite her in her butt hard. Because she completed 4 of her classes for the next your such as English, Algebra, Science, and an art class. Her doing that meant she could graduate early and she would regardless. She had hopes of leaving her father as soon as she turned 18 but since she was out a year earlier she was only 17 and she had to spend every day of the 363 days until it was her birthday with him. They would argue and he would call her the nastiest of names and do anything to crush the happiness she came home with. Harlem had been working at a local restaurant since 3 days after her birthday. She had finally had enough money to leave, the day 7 days from her being able to move out her father had yelled for her and she walked in only to find him holding a knife and locking the door. Harlem screamed in fear and asked him, "Dad, what are you planning on doing with that!" with him staying quiet and approaching her she said, "Dad, seriously unlock the door! Let me out!" she tried to run through him quickly and with her trying that he swiftly jabbed her in the stomach with the knife in a swift movement. She started to gasp for air and slowly fell to the floor but she could still see. She heard the door break down and hit the ground. She couldn't believe what she saw, she saw a kid from school; always dressed in button ups, blue jeans, and Chuck Taylor's. He tackled her father to the ground and started to choke him with her father trying to resist, the boy grabbed one of her fathers bottles smashing the end off and stabbing him in the throat with what was left. He did it crying more tears than Harlem had ever seen in her life. He quickly jumped off of her father and rushed to her, "Harlem! Harlem! Oh come on Harlem! Please! Please don't die! HARLEM!!!" he started to cry even harder as her vision faded to black and she was completely limp in his arms.
