As I looked around the overflowing cafeteria, I wondered where I would sit. Ten rows of long white tables crossed the room. I decided not to think too much about where I was going to sit because it was never good for me. Hungry students yelled across the room and I would have probably listened to each one of their conversations. But I didn't. I ended up finding a table that wasn't overly crowded and sat down. After I paid for my lunch I spotted Rya eagerly waving me over. I smiled as I walked over to her.
"Naomi, sit at our table!" she enthused as she pointed over to a small segment of the long lunch table. There sat three girls that looked like they were having a great time.
"Sure, let me just get my backpack," I explained. When I was walking to the table that I first sat at I saw two girls laughing and pointing at me. What did I do wrong? Was my shirt inside out? I took my backpack and Rya quickly pulled me over.
"Don't worry about them. They're just jerks that like to make people hate themselves," she told me while glaring at their table. I sat next to Rya, so the three other girls were across from me. I decided to introduce myself since I could have been sitting there for a while.
"Hi, I'm Naomi. I met Rya in show choir and I was homeschooled before this year," I tell them. Their faces were instantly welcoming as one of the girls spoke up. She had hair as dark as the night sky and energetic blue eyes.
"I'm Clara, we all have been best friends since we were in sixth grade," she kindly explains while pointing to Rya and the two other girls.
Another girl with ivory skin and a radiant smile spoke up, "I'm Eleanor and this is Evelyn, but we all call her Evie," she explained while pointing to a girl with tan skin and short light brown hair. Evelyn waved to me and gave me a small smile.
After we introduced ourselves I noticed that we only had fifteen more minutes of lunch and I hadn't even started eating. I brought up the pizza that was still warm to the touch up to my mouth and took a bite. I already had low expectations for school lunches, but this was a new low. As I slowly chewed the rubbery pizza it was like I was chewing salty gum. I had been chewing the cheese for two minutes and it wasn't going down. Clara looked over at me and had a face of empathy as she giggled.
"Not all of it is terrible. I usually just eat fruit, I don't think they could mess up fruit," Clara laughed. As I chewed on the probably inedible pizza, I made eye contact with Rya and we both burst out laughing. Within ten seconds all five of us were laughing, and my stomach started to hurt. Nothing was particularly funny, but we continued dying from laughter for a few minutes.
Eleanor held up her hand and sputtered, "I think I just got a six pack."
"Yeah, me too," I told them. It felt good to just laugh for once. I hadn't laughed like that in a long time.
"Brrring!" the hideous bell rung.
"Bye!'" Clara yelled. As we parted, the girls waved back to me. It felt nice to be part of something. For practically my whole life, I've had one friend, and it felt nice to be accepted into a new group.
I looked at the extensive school floor map that I got in the mail about a week before school started. I scanned the wrinkly page for room 231. It was only the next hallway from the cafeteria, which was definitely convenient. As I passed through the hallway, I noticed that it was different than the other hallways. This hall didn't have motivational posters or red lockers. It was just filled with beige walls and hard floors. I guessed that the teacher standing outside of room 231 was the Algebra teacher.
"Good morning, you can just sit at any seat you find," she told me with a kind smile. When I walked into the green walled Algebra room, I didn't see any familiar faces, until I looked in the right corner of the room. There sat Evelyn from lunch, and I briskly walked towards her. When she looked from her book, her face lit up. I sat next to her and the teacher started speaking. She basically told us the same thing that every other teacher tells us. She introduced herself as Ms. Rainis. She had blond hair and was wearing a long black skirt. I started to tune out as all of her words jumbled together. A long white board spanned across the whole front wall and there were posters with colorful equations on them. Math was my best subject along with literature. After Ms. Rainis gave her hefty speech, she passed out a warmup to prepare us for the first unit. After I read the warmup, I realized that I didn't get my math notebook from my locker. After I got a pass, I headed out the door to find my locker. When I turned the corner, I felt a nudge on my shoulder. I looked over and I couldn't believe my eyes.
