once upon a time, in a faraway place that might not have been too far away, there was a boy.

two boys.

these boys were different in all different manners. one was panic! at the disco, the other was one direction. one had never missed a day of class in his life, the other cut school on a regular basis. one was messy, one was freshly pressed and ironed at all times.

they were black and white; the way that shadows cool the grass and the way that dead grass itches your skin; they were the heat of running from a one night stand against the way fake tears fell when a relationship ended.

things they had in common? well, they both enjoyed coffee immensely, but who doesn't? that, and they were both heartbreakers. heartbreakers with secrets.

the first boy, freshly pressed, neatly quiffed, straight-a student. he left a trail of lonely girls behind him, though nothing was ever quite his fault. the usual excuses were made: it just wasn't "working"; there wasn't a "spark"; he decided he wasn't looking for a "relationship". this boy's secret was that there was never anything there in the first place.

the second boy, messy, grunge, skipper. anyone who wanted him knew they'd better make the most of it, because he didn't stick around for long. the difference was that this boy's trail of exes - if you could call them that - were of the male variety. he slept his way around, going to school when he felt like it. his secret was that he was missing something he didn't want.

why did they have these secrets? because, even though society deemed them nearly adults, they were just scared little boys.

the thing about secrets, though, was that there was always one person who could take all of your darkest secrets and turn them into gold in the sunlight.

the first boy was terrified of that.

the second boy thought his secrets were safe behind iron walls.

the first thought if he just avoided finding that person, he would be safe. he thought if he stuck to fresh pressed shirts and peppermint flavored starbucks drinks, he would be fine.

something about the second boy though, was that he hated peppermint."
