I can't sleep. The incessant scratching in the walls is making it impossible. I sigh, getting up to check the rat repellent plug in thing that my dad got a few weeks ago. It's plugged in. Why are they still here? I look up, my eyes adjusting to the dark of the hallway slowly. What was that? My eyes are playing tricks... What is that... it... it almost looks like a person...
I back down the hall towards my room, the hair on my arms standing on end. There's no way...
"Daddy?" I call quietly, the form turning around quickly. A horrified gasp escapes my mouth. That's not my dad... or anything human... it... it doesn't have a face... I dash to my room quickly, shutting the door behind me. I sit on the floor, keeping the door from being opened.
Thump.... thump... thump... thump... the sound of footsteps on the carpeted floor makes fear bubble up in my chest. The scratching in the walls gets louder.
I look up, watching the doorknob turn slowly. I cover my mouth, muffling a whimper. I can feel the door behind me push against my back, barely opening before I force it back. I can feel the terror in the pit of my stomach. My hands are shaking.
"Daddy!" I scream, praying to any god that might be listening. 'Please let him hear me. Please.
A sob escapes my lips and I hear the sound of my dad's door open. Tears stream down my cheeks as I listen.
I can hear my dad shout... Thump... thump... thump... thump... the footsteps leave my door. The sickening sound of my dad screaming... a crack... a snap... more screaming...
I sob and crawl over to my bed, grabbing my phone and charger before crawling to my closet. I close and lock the door, pressing the button to turn my phone on.
A loud thud is followed by silence.... Thump... thump... thump... the footsteps are heading back towards my room. I quickly dial 911, my hands shaking as I put the phone to my ear.
"911, what is your emergency?" The woman on the other side says.
I let out a sob, "Theres man here." I whisper, listening as the footsteps get closer.
"Where are you?" The woman asks calmly.
"I'm at my dad's house... 2746 rainman drive." I whisper, "My dad's hurt..." I whimper, "Please hurry."
The woman on the other end is miraculously calm, as if I'd just asked her for a burger and fries. "Okay, someone is on the way, just stay on the line with me." She says.
I cover my mouth as my bedroom door opens, trying not to make noise.
Thump... Thump... Thump.... Thump... I hear my bed springs squeak... was... was that a bell?
I drop my phone, a scream getting caught in my throat as a pair of hands grabs me from behind. I can feel myself getting pulled back against the closet wall, the cold, bony fingers digging into my shoulders. The scream is released as soon as I feel the wall behind me.
I can hear the woman on the phone, but only enough to know that she's talking.
Bang! Bang! Bang! I stare up at the door as heavy fists bang against it, the fear turning my stomach to ice. I can feel hot breath on my neck, icy fingers holding onto me in a vice grip. I'm going to die here tonight.
A scream erupts from my mouth as I feel the bones in my shoulders start to give under the hard hands of whatever might be holding me. Pain shoots through my arms as the bones turn to fractured splinters under my skin.
The world is black and cold. Nothing is in this impending darkness. I feel nothing. And then I'm there. A creature standing over me, it's piercing silver eyes reigniting the fear in my heart.
I scream again as my body ignites into powerful flames of pain. The door to my closet opens, and there stands the thing. It's covered in blood... a wicked grin exposing sharp jagged teeth, like a terrifying Cheshire Cat grin. It has no eyes, but in the dark of its face I can see a deeper dimension of black... holes... right where eyes would be.
Fear paralyzes my screaming and crying, my eyes staringUnblinkingly at the creature of my nightmares. And that's all I remember. My death wasn't painless and peaceful. It was terrifying. I can still feel pain in my bones, even though i have none. I can't say whether you will meet such a terrifying fate. But I can tell you that the scratching in that old house isn't the pesky rats you would like to think it is.
