How long? Thought the girl chained to the wall in the large white room. She had been there all her life. Tortured by horrible tests they had put her through. She never understood why. She thought that it was because her hair was an odd color or she had horns. Or because she had invisible arms that could cut things.

The girl lifted her head and looked at the glass window and looked at all the scientists typing away or writing something down. Some stared at her with clip boards in their hands. She hated them all, but even so, when one came in everyday twice a day to give her her meals and unchain her, she didn’t fight. She had been obedient ever since she could remember, and yet she didn’t get praised, nor did they lighten up the testing.

Some day… she thought, some day they’ll all pay for what they’ve done. I put her head back down and let her body hang loosely. She could almost hear their keyboard keys click as they got pushed and their pencils scraping against the paper.

She looked back up and saw him enter the room behind the glass. She had heard the scientist and guard call him by a name that started with K at sometimes. She heard them talk about him. How he thought what they were doing was cruel, and how they had thought about doing to #35 what they had done to her. She had also heard that #35 was the man’s daughter, and that his other “daughter”, #7. Had died.

The girl for a long time had thought that she was alone in this awful place. That she was the only kind of her species. Her suspicion was laid to rest when talk of others like her sprung up between the scientist and guard. It some how comforted her to know she wasn’t alone. That someone else felt the same pain she felt. But it also hurt her to know they did it to all of her kind they found.

She saw the man, who she referred to as K, say something to one of the scientists at the main computer. The scientist nodded and stood from his computer and went to the door. It creaked as it opened and he went to the panel on the wall and released her wrists from the chains. She slumped to the ground and looked at her wrists. This was odd, they were off schedule.

K walked into the room. He approached her and kneeled in front of her. She looked at him with pink eyes. His eyes were hidden from the glare of his glasses. He seemed to study her.

“Saki,” his voice had no emotion as he spoke, “I need to ask you for a favor.”

The girl, Saki, stared at him and then asked, “What would I get in return?”

“Freedom.” K replied.

Saki’s eyes went wide. Did he just say freedom? Actual freedom or just no more testing? Saki thought looking at him. She couldn’t read his emotion because he was emotionless.

“Freedom?” Saki asked.

“We have done all the testing on you that we need to. If you succeed in doing this mission, then you will be set free in the nearest city.” K said.

“What do I have to do?” Saki asked.

“Find and return an escaped Diclonii. Because you are also a diclonii, you will be able to sense where he is.” K said.

That’s right. That’s what my species is called. Diclonii. Diclonius is what they call many of us. Saki thought. She had forgotten a while ago what her species is called. Now she remembered. But then she realized he had said he. Most Diclonius were born female.

“You said, he. “ Saki said.

“Yes. He is the first ever male Diclonii.  But he was naturally born.” K said pushing up his glasses.

Saki thought about this. She knew that for humans the male was usually stronger than the female. Would it be the same for Diclonii or different? She would have to find out to gain her freedom.

“Fine. I’ll find and bring him back. What is he called?” Saki said.

“His number is forty-five. We call him Carter.”
