Walking in the woods in the middle of the day in the middle of winter may not have been the wisest decision on my part. It wasn't wise for me at least, I was wearing a short sleeved shirt and shorts and it was kinda cold. I didn't intend on going out in these clothes. But my dog River decided he wanted to go chase something in the woods which means I had to follow him. It's been about 15 minutes since I last saw him and I'm not too happy right now. I'm shivering to death and have no clue where he went. What makes me really upset though is that he was a marine dog so he is really well trained and he doesn't just run off after something.
"River!" I yelled as loud as I could.
I waited a few seconds after I yelled and I heard a bark. I started walking in that direction and soon found him. He was at the bottom of a tree and was looking up at it eagerly then once he saw me he ran over to me licked my hand and got on my left side and sat looking up at me.
"River what is it boy?" I asked shivering as a cold breeze passed by. Then all of a sudden a raccoon started to come down the tree and it had my brothers watch. My eyes widened and I stared at the raccoon and looked at River.
"Sam's watch." I said quietly.
River whimpered and I nodded my head and he stalked up to the raccoon and pounced on it and got the watch. "Good boy River" I praised him
He started barking happily and ran around a little.
" Okay I now see why you got me to chase you in these clothes. But next time get it without me boy. It's really cold out." I said
River barked as an agreement.
"Let's go home."
We were deep in the woods and it would take about 20 minutes for us to get home. As we were walking we heard a twig snap. Causing both River and myself to tense up and look around. I didn't see anything and began to walk again river at my heel looking very alert. When River started to growl I knew something was with us. If I was by myself I may have been afraid but I had River and I knew I could trust River with my life so I wasn't afraid.
River got in front of me and got into a fighting stance. His head was held high his ears were forward and his tail was up along with his fur being raised. He never stopped growing. Then a very skinny and a very dirty brown wolf walked out of the brush in front of us. River showed his canines and let out a murderous growl and took a step closer to the wolf. The wolf walked forward and growled back loudly at River then looked up at me. The wolf's eyes looked weird. The pupil looked like it was melting it that makes any sense. It reminded me of the defiant pupil off of Zoo the TV show.
The wolf stopped walking and and took its own fighting stance. It then jumped over River and came straight for me. Raming into me and making me fall on my back with the wolf on top of me going for my neck. I held it back by its neck and then rolled so I was in top of the wolf I was trying to show I was more dominant but I guess it didn't care and it somehow got me on my back again. My first thought was is this wolf rabid? But It wasn't foaming at the mouth and it didn't seem disoriented. River ran into the wolf from its side and they started fighting. River was doing good until another wolf with the same kind of eyes came and knocked him over. Then another wolf came at me from behind. I went tumbling down with the wolf and this one kept scratching me and actually bit my arm before I could break its neck. I then ran over to River to help him but two more very big and healthy wolves came out and went after the two wolves on him. They easily killed the two skinny wolves. They also calmed River down then walked over to me as I was about to pass out because of blood loss. Just as they got to me I passed out.
