I wake up, once again to an empty house. At this point in my life, I am used to waking up with no one home. I honestly don't even remember the last time I woke up with someone being home. I force myself out of my comfy bed and stammer myself into the kitchen.
As I walk around the island that sits in the center of the kitchen I notice a note with a hundred dollar bill attached to it.
"Alexa,
I am so sorry. The office called me this morning and wanted me to come in to go over a case I was just assigned. I will make it up to you! In the meantime, here is $200. Go shopping or something!
Love, Mom"
I simply detach the money and crumple up the note and throw it away. Walking away from the garbage can, I decided to grab a bowl and have some Frosted Flakes. Just sitting there at the island my mind took over. What if she doesn't care about me? I mean it would make sense of why she is never around anymore. So what if she has a job? She can at least come home at night.
After finishing my breakfast, I head upstairs to get ready for school. Choosing a white crop top, black high-rise skinny jeans, knee-high boots, a leather jacket, and a grey beanie to tie the look together. I grab my phone and glance at the time.
6:45 AM reads across my screen.
I unlock my phone and dial my best friend Amber.
The phone rings twice before I hear Amber's groggy voice ripping through my eardrum. "Why must you call me so early?"
"Because if I didn't we both would be late to school and you know it. Now get up and get ready." I reply to her with a snicker.
With that, I grab my book bag and head downstairs. All I can think about was the note that my mom left me. She didn't even bother waking me up! I grabbed my bag and realized that it was a lot lighter then it should be. I open it up, to see two notebooks, a few broken pencils, and my binder. But no history book. I begin to start looking for my history book when my phone goes off.
It's a text message from Amber. On my way over, we are getting coffee.
I begin to frantically look for my book when I realize that Amber has it. I grab my bag and begin to head downstairs when I hear Amber honk. I lock the door behind me as I scurry out of the ginormous house, not once looking behind me to see if anyone was waving goodbye. There never is.
As I get into the cherry red Camero, I notice that Amber is texting someone, something she never does this early in the morning.
"Hey!" I said distracting her from her phone.
"Hey, sorry needed to respond to this kid I tutor." She looks up at me with a smile, putting her phone down.
"Ooh. Is he cute?" I kid around.
"What? No. Kind of. But I only tutor him." She replies as I buckle my seatbelt.
"Oh okay." I laugh.
She starts the car and all you can hear is the roar of the V8 engine. I love the sound of it. Her dad had her and I help rebuild the motor for Amber last summer so she could have the car. By far, that has been my favorite summer.
Being a kid with only one parent, who doesn't even spend time with you, sucks. Everyone pities you. When I go over to Amber's house, I feel as if I am part of her family. I mean yeah, her and I have been best friends since second grade, but I feel as if I am their daughter.
The sound of screeching tires breaks my train of thought, bringing me back to the present. As I snap out of the trance that I was in, I notice my history book laying in the back seat.
