She’s here. I know she is.

“Theresa!” I shout out. Wait a minute- who’s Theresa? “THERESA!” I’m scaring myself. I sound like I’m having a panic attack. My voice softens as I whisper, “I need you.”

“I’m right here,” laughs a pretty voice. Not too high. The perfect pitch. It sounds like she’s been practicing her whole life to say those three words.

But her voice is nothing compared to her beauty. As she steps out from behind a tree, it seems like she lights up the entire densely shaded forest. Her emerald green eyes shine at me, and she flashes me a quick, white, tooth-showing smile. I notice every tooth is aligned perfectly. She has long, glimmering, mouse-brown hair, with bangs that would make any one of my friends drool.

I want to continue standing there, in awe of her beauty, but instead I launch playfully at her, which makes her squeal and dart behind another tree. I locate her immediately, and wrap my arms around her waist. She giggles and tries to get me off, but only succeeds in toppling both of us onto the ground. I grunt as she lands on top of me, which only makes her laugh harder. She crawls off, and we entertain ourselves by tossing grass at each other.

I spot a wild lilac wilting in the shade a few feet away, so I pluck it and hold it out to her. “Here’s my sad excuse of a corsage,” I laugh, watching as a purple petal drops heavily to the ground.

But she doesn’t respond how I thought she would. Instead, she stares at it, and then sends out a blood-curdling scream. I don’t even see her flinch, but suddenly I’m shot backwards, and end up on my back in the grass. I lift my finger from the ground, and find it soaked in blood.

Her screaming still rings in my ears.

                I wake up.

                Ugh, my throbbing head…

My hand instinctively slams on the alarm clock that still screams in my ear. I hear a crunch under the impact of my fist. Whoops.

I flip onto my back, and stare at the bland, gray ceiling. I still see her face, taunting my thoughts. Why did she scream? What happened to her? What happened to me? Sigh. So many questions that would have been answered if I hadn’t woken up.

I rub my eyes, and find my hands clammy. I wipe them on my sheets, and reluctantly get out of bed. A quick shower refreshes me, and I grab some shorts and a T-shirt to face the blisteringly hot weather. I fumble with getting toast out of the toaster, making a mental note to learn that move where you grab it just as it pops up, and head out the door in some sandals.

I stroll through some alleys, taking my time in the warming sun. Who gives a crap if I’m late? I would love to be fired, but that stupid electronics store needs all the help it can get. So, basically, I’m stuck there whether I like it or not.

While I squint in the over-heating sunshine, I catch a girl on a bleached bench looking at me. And I mean, like LOOKING at me. I don't even look at her more than once to know that she's still staring at me. I don't want to sound full of myself, but that's kind of usual. I'm pretty good-looking, I guess.

But it's different with her. Usually, when girls look at me, they giggle stupidly when they catch me catch them. But this girl just scowls when I wave at her. I stop, smile, and shout, "Hey." All she does is scowl some more, then looks down, and pretends to be interested in a giant book that lays open on her lap.

What's her deal?  I think. I try to look tough by scowling back, but she's not even looking at me. Sigh. Oh, well.

I get to LexTronics, get the usual boring lecture about "lateness is not good citizenship," whatever that means, and get behind the cash register for my shift. Pulling out my phone, I hear an exasperated sigh from the manager. Ha.

The store, "customer alert" bell rings, and everyone immediately takes position. I stuff my phone in my pocket, and feel another stare. I look at the door to see the girl that was scowling at me earlier standing in the doorway. About five guys in the store stare at her. I look at her as though she was an enemy.

"You!" she shouts, pointing at me. "How could you?"

Man, what the heck is this chic's problem? "What do you want?" I growl.

She hesitates, and waves away the guys that are still staring at her. They nod obediently, and start dusting off random shelves that don't need dusting. Now she speaks in a hushed whisper. "Are you freaking telling me you don't remember?"

I stare at her in disgust. "What the crap are you talking about?" I start to rack my brain. Is she one of my ex-girlfriends, maybe? No, I don't remember her at all. Just to be sure, I ask. "Are you, possibly, one of my ex's? If so, look, I'm really, truely sorry for whatever I did...I---"

She laughs, without any humor, cutting me off. "Are you kidding me?" she asks, glaring at me. "You honestly don't remember me?"

I get a flash of rememberance, but then it hides in the back of my brain, and is quickly forgotten. "I don't know....Is there something you can do to help me remember who you are?"

She thinks for a moment, then lights up, although her face still holds the usual scowl. Out of nowhere, she takes my arms, wraps them around her, and giggles non-stop. I smile, then realize how weird this is. I pull away from her, and when she turns around, she looks more annoyed than ever- as though I was the one who did that. "Now do you remember?" she asks impatiently.

"No, I don't think I--" I start. Then, I stare into her eyes. I remember those green eyes. I  remember that amazingly silky, brown hair. I know this odd girl.

Because she is, quite literally, the girl of my dreams.

It comes to me in a rush of information, and I start to feel light-headed. I want to tell her I know who she is, but all I can get out is, "You...you're...her...she....in....you're from my dreams." I rush out that last part, wasting all the breath I can. She apparently gets the memo, because she just smiles.

"Yes," she whispers. And, to add to the Series of Wacky Events, she vanishes before my eyes. Like my computer sometimes does when it lags. Just, you know, woosh

I feel my head throbbing to the beat of my heart. My eyes fall to the ground. I watch as the dirt-covered floor comes closer and closer to my head. I feel the impact of my head smashing the ground, and the world goes black.
