Fireflies

As I raise my eyes from the forest floor I see tiny fireflies dancing among the trees, I stare in wonder at the lights. "Child. " Mother's voice breaks through my daydream, I look at my mother standing with a bundle of wood in her arms, our soul purpose for being out of the cottage at night. Everyone knew never to be in the Forrest of haven at night. My mother looks toward the lights and is not as happy as I. Her breathe comes out fast as her reply. "Come child we must go now. " I drop what kindling I had gathered to match her wild race through the trees. I take one last look back and realize. Those aren't fireflies. Those are torches.
