~Chapter Ten - You Would've Looked Like A Rotting Corpse~

The next day, I drove to school and parked in my usual spot, before grabbing my backpack and stepping out of the car and directly into a warm patch of sunlight that was shining through a small group of clouds.

I closed my door at the exact same time Ryan did. Due to the fact he only had a learner’s permit, and this was my car, I didn’t let him drive to school, and instead drove us both. We just met after school, and he chipped in half for gas.

I locked the car behind us and bid my brother goodbye, before going off in search of Hayley. I was surprised Ryan wasn’t following me to find her, since they seemed to be dating at the moment. Well, I use that term loosely due to the fact that they had only been on one date—Saturday night. But Hayley had called me Sunday morning to give me all the gory details, which I had no desire—at all—to hear from her. I faked enthusiasm, but mostly tuned out. I didn’t want to hear about my brother’s adorable smile, or his kind words, or his enchanting eyes. I’d prefer to keep my breakfast down, thank you very much.

When I found her at her locker—which was very conveniently located next to mine (This was where he had first met)—I smiled at her. “Hey, Haylz. What’s up?”

“Have you heard the terrible news?” Hayley asked, and she truly seemed upset and worried about it. She pushed some of her auburn curls behind her ears and crossed her arms over her chest.

Immediately my heart started beating faster, and I felt worry cripple me as I looked around the halls and saw and heard people whispering all around us. “No,” I said slowly. “What?”

She leaned closer. “They found Finn McDermott’s body last night,” she confided in a low voice. I felt my blood run cold. “Apparently it was dug up in the woods by some hunters. The night after he vanished, there was a thunderstorm, meaning it probably ruined his scent in the woods. That’s why the dogs couldn’t pick it up. Poor guy. Poor family, too.”

I struggled to comprehend what Hayley was telling me. They had found Finn’s body. One of our worries was that Finn’s unfinished business would be that his body hadn’t been found, so Finn’s soul couldn’t move on. Was there a chance that now it had been found, Finn had left? I knew I should be happy at this new prospect, but instead I felt a crippling horror at that thought. Why? I don’t know. All I knew was that the thought of Finn being gone sent chills down my spine—and not in a good way.

“That’s awful,” I said, trying to act as normal as possible. As far as Hayley was concerned, Finn was just my boyfriend’s old, missing best friend.

            My boyfriend.

I had to see how Lucas was going, and if this new discovery had made him tense or nervous. I went to tell Hayley this, but she cut me off to continue her story. I bounced from foot-to-foot impatiently.
