Alaska's POV
"What do you mean you know!" Ben almost screeched.
"Um, hello? I was your best friend as well as your lover. You of all people should know that I have excellent gaydar."
"When did you know? Did you ever really love me?"
At this moment he began mumbling hysterics.
"Oh my god, calm down," I began. "I guess I always knew and I was just ignoring it. Eventually I admitted it to myself and was going to break it off but I thought you would trust me enough to tell me so I was waiting for you to tell me the truth. You didn't and that's why I didn't talk to you for so long."
"Oh," was his only response.
"Yeah."
"Well that's all I needed to say so, goodbye."
That is when Laney popped out of the bushes.
"No way. Excuse me?! No apology for leaving her in the dark? No apology for not telling your two best friends in the world that you were gay? Or did I hear wrong?"
"Laney, I-"
"No apologize right now!" Laney replied.
"I'm sorry."
"Not enough, you have to bring me chocolate cake from your dad's bakery for a year."
"I...but...he'll...ok," he said.
"I also expect 2 sugar cookies on my desk every day for a month." I said.
"You two are going to get me killed. Do you even understand how dead I will be when my dad finds out that his ingredients are missing. A month I understand, but a year? No dice."
"I'm a reasonable woman. I'll tell you what, I can do a month if you put in a good word for me with your cousin Reggie."
See, this had been Laney's plan all along. She has her ways of convincing people that she wants a lot from them and then telling them she needs less so that they will believe that it's not that big of a deal. This is something she has attempted to do to me on several occasions. Unlike Ben, I don't fall for it anymore. Considering I'm the one who taught her this trick it shouldn't work on me.
"Reggie hates you with a burning passion and I hope you know that. She probably won't listen to me, I will however put in a good word for you went I go to visit her at her institution," Ben said.
Let me explain this in the shortest way possible. Reggie is, obviously, Ben's cousin who we have all known since we were three. Reggie, full name Regina Carlyle, has also had an eating disorder since we were all 12 and she was 13 and since Ben's uncle couldn't handle her anymore he institutionalized her. Laney has had a crush on Reggie since we were all 8 and has always been extremely open about it. Extremely. Reggie had always known this and pushed Laney away. Unfortunately for Reggie, Laney is the definition of persistent.
"I think that our dear Regina is just hiding from her true feelings of love that are felt for me."
We began walking back out of the creek and near the park that was nearby when I spoke up.
"She would murder you in cold blood if you ever openly called her that."
"She'd be too busy kissing my face to do that."
Ben and I began laughing at this and Laney simply began to pelt rocks at us. As we were running away from the rocks that were thrown with an undeniable hatred we found something gleaming in the back of the woods.
Whatever it was, it was shining so bright that we all began to squint as we moved towards it with excellent grace and poise. Just kidding! Laney began running after it and jumped, actually jumped, over Ben to get to it.
Since I would obviously never stoop down to their childish ways I did it classily and tripped Ben which caused Laney, who was on his shoulders attacking, to also fall.
"Ha! Losers!" I screamed back pointing before realizing that there was a tree where my face should be.
Now it was their turn to laugh. I was about to make a witty comment before I saw what was on the floor of the forest.
"Come on Alaska, you have to have som... whoa." Laney awed.
We all looked down to see some giant silver ball on the floor.
"What is that?" Laney questioned and pointed.
"It looks like a glass eye and it's glowing." Ben gave in an answer.
"So who's gonna touch it first?" I asked.
Laney decided she should be the one to explain the situation.
"Ok, so here we are in the middle of the woods an a shiny object is just magically here. Now if, say, someone went missing because this object was dangerous people would notice. Two of us more than one. Ben is just too popular for people to dismiss it and I'm too annoying for people to not realize I was gone."
Ben nodded in agreement and began to talk.
"Not only that but it should be the person who saw it first to touch it and who's older and therefore more wise."
Now was Laney's turn to nod. Both of them took a step back and looked at me expectantly.
"Glad to know I'm dismissive. You're saying that you want me to just touch some random object on the ground and make sure it's safe for you guys?"
They both nodded and, in an almost synchronized fashion, held out there hands as to signal me to go forward.
"Ben, if I don't die our friendship is expired and Laney I'm telling Reggie that you made her a shrine."
"Last time you said that the end of the friendship lasted a week after I broke up with you."
"And Reggie already knows about the shrine."
"I hate you both," I growled as I took a step forward.
I walked over slowly and dragged my feet carefully as I walked closer and closer to it. It glowed brighter. I could feel Laney and Ben move to my side as we all leaned down. It was defiantly a glass eye. I put one finger on the top of it and saw two more fingers come to join mine. We all picked it up at the same time, all taking turns inspecting it with care.
I felt a jolt pass through me and by the looks on my companions faces they had felt it too. It was a jolt of disappointment. The eye contained no magical power and the three of us were just standing there like idiots wondering where we went wrong.
"You kids better get away from my eye. Get away from my eye!" An old man screeched.
In the heat of the moment I didn't know what to do. I threw the glass eye to the ground and it rolled close to his foot. He slipped and fell to the ground. I realized it was old Mr. Fender who lived in the woods. This was not good.
