Lunch time was over and so, I had to get to my next class. I walked with Dylan to Math and he seemed troubled by something.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
He remained silent for a while. He stared at the ground while walking next to me. He looked like he had an internal conflict on whether or not to tell me his problem. After what seemed like forever, he broke the silence, "Um... I just wanted to ask why were you so bothered by the fact that Thomas is the dean's son. If you don't want to tell me, then that's okay."
I froze. I just met him, should I trust him? What if he told Thomas about my mission and then he tells the dean, then I would be in so much trouble, I may not even get out alive? Questions flooded my head, drowning out Dylan's repeated calls of my name.
His poke saved me from drowning further into my thoughts.
"Hey, you okay?" he asked, concerned. I could feel he was genuine with his words but, I mean, I was being homeschooled all my life, I've never interacted with many people before, I don't think I'm in the right position to make judgements on people now. I think I should wait until I can fully trust him to tell him about my mission.
"Oh, I was just shocked by the fact, that's all. Nothing more." I said, trying to hide that I was lying. Dylan just nodded, obviously not convinced.
"Then where were you before you enrolled here?" He asked, trying to start a conversation.
"I was homeschooled by my mum," I replied.
"Why did you decide to come here then?"
"I felt that I was too... trapped. I felt like I had no freedom. All the years, I've never really interacted with anyone. This is like, the longest conversation I have ever had with someone who isn't my mum." I chuckled light-heartedly. All I got was a nod which seemed very solemn. Maybe he pitied me for not having anyone else to talk to for almost my whole life. Well, I don't blame him. How could anyone survive without a friend to talk to? Looking back now, I wondered how I haven't died from the boredom of not having a companion.
"Enough of me now. How long have you been friends with Ki Hong and the others?"
His eyes lit up. "I have been friends with Ki Hong for maybe ten years. I remembered meeting him when he came to my house door to sell cookies. He was a boy scout then. He looked so cute in that uniform, I wished I had a camera then! It would make a great blackmail material." He let a snicker escape his mouth. "He asked me if I wanted some cookies and I said, "Why not you just buy all of them for yourself instead of wasting your energy going door-to-door. It's a win-win situation for your organisation, you and me. I hate people waking me up on a Saturday morning." He laughed so hard at what I had said, I still don't know what's so funny about it, and afterwards, well you know what happened," he flashed a smile. Good to know that I managed to uplift his mood a bit.
"For Kaya, we went to the same preschool together, I knew she was smart, I always relied on her to give me answers for work." He paused to laugh for a while. I could see that he felt great having good memories coming back to him. "Thomas? I met him when I was in the line for the autograph of a TV show producer in Comin Con and found out we loved many characters for the same reason."
He paused, then continued to say, "How about you? Surely, you did have a close friend despite being homeschooled, right?" His eyes filled with curiosity.
I thought for a while and then, a memory came back. A boy of about four of age and a girl of five of age were playing together, running, chasing each other in the lush green backyard of the girl's house. I could smell the refreshing freshness of the grass. They tumbled down onto the grass, giggling as they tugged at the hems of each others' shirts. Although the memory wasn't clear, it was a nice one.
"I had a friend, I can't exactly remember his name now, since it was so long ago but I remember I had wonderful and memorable time with him." I unconsciously smiled. Dylan returned the smile. Somehow, I felt like he knew exactly what I was talking about.
The bell went off and we were only halfway to Math class. I knew the usual Dylan was back when I saw the smirk return back onto his face. "Race you there?" I sprinted off before giving him and answer and, of course, you know who the winner was.
It was Dylan.
