Chapter 1:

Beauty & The Beast

×××

For the 7th time that week, Reese stood in the mirror of her bathroom, applying the necessary amount of make up to hide her bruises. She stopped with the palette opened in front of her, staring at the pale shades. Reese bit down on the inside of her cheek, thinking about the past.

Wondering, specifically, how she had ended up in this situation.

From the living room you could hear Landon and his friends laughing at something one of his other girlfriends had said. Reese hated it, he thought she was stupid and didn't see he was cheating on her. Her bitter feelings towards the girls he hung around had to stay hidden though.

Or she would end up in her current situation again.
It was only that lately, Reese's tolerance for Landon and his friends had been thinning. She would snap if one of them dropped ashes on the rug, broke one of their vases, or punched a hole in the wall. And if Reese went on a walk to cool down, Landon would flip himself.

The only safe haven she had was work and her friend Harvard's house.

When Reese was done masking her wounds, she stepped into the smoke filled hallway and slipped the make up back into her purse. "-and the guy tried to run, but he didn't get very far. You already know, Paul came in with that motorcycle in .3 seconds!"

When Landon caught a glimpse of Reese at the front door, he stopped her with a simple, "Where you headed, Babe?"

She cringed at the word, turning to smile at him and the redhead Yvette Ackerman sitting in the chair beside him. As soon as she left, he'd make some excuse to get up and show Yvette somewhere. Which Reese knew by now, had always meant "I'll be right back, gonna go fuck Yvette's brains out."

"Work. As usual." Her voice lacked any type of affection. Which also made Landon mad. But Reese saw no point in pretending she wanted to be with him, when she knew she didn't.

"And no goodbye? Come on now Reese." Landon sat up straight, patting the spot on his lap for her to come sit.

"I can't. I'm almost late." She lied.

"Reese..." He lowered his eyes, aware of the faint lie playing on her lips. But she didn't respond, only opened the door and stepped out into the biting breeze.

Finally, she could walk to her car and cry on her way to work.

Reese got in her car and started it when her phone rang, she answered the Bluetooth with a sad smile. "Hey."

"Hello there Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, headed to work?" Harvard's voice filled every inch of her car, making majority of her sadness go away. Besides the fact that her face was extremely tender to the touch.

"Maybe. I might call in sick, not feeling super good."
Which was what she had already done. Her boss gave her the rest of the week off once she explained her fake symptoms. Though, she couldn't bare another minute in that house.

"You gotta go to work, no excuses."

Reese sighed, peeling out if the driveway and making her way down the street. "I'm in a lot of pain, and I didn't want to be home."
