"Come on Violet we are going to be late to court," said her mother Lilly.

"I'm coming mom no need to yell. I don't see why I have to go anyway," I replied.

"Because this hearing tells us who you get to live with."

"Aren't I old enough to make that choice for myself?"

"You are only 16 Violet."

"And?"

"Just lets go Violet please don't make this any worse than it has to be."

"Fine." We walked out of the house and entered a black 2015 Chevy Cruse. The 20 min. ride to the court house had a very unappealing silence to it. Mom looked very worried for some reason but I don't know why she was the rich one out of my parents being a doctor and dad was a construction worker.

When we arrived to the court house it felt like I knew the place all too well. I have been here so many times for no reason I mean I didn't really have a reason to come to the hearings until now. When court began mom and dad both argued over who gets to have rights over me but I didn't really hear much. I went off in my own world of playing the violin. It was my happy place. Playing the violin brought joy to me since I was a little girl it gets me distracted from all the bad things that have or are happening in life. Like when mom and dad are fighting ,or the thought and dread of going to court all the time ,or when I think of mom telling me we are going to move to Florida if she get rights over me. The violin is my safe place. Just the feeling of the strings beneath my finger tips and the bow gliding... "Violet."... across the strings.... "Violet".... making the most beautiful of music... "Violet are you listening?" said my mother.

"Not really," I replied.

"You need to be, this is your future. I understand you see no point in this but we do so will you please listen to what's going on."

"Okay."

"Now back to what I was saying, the court has decided that Violet is going to stay with her mom and her father will get her on breaks from school. The summer and holidays will alternate back and forth. That is the final decision. Court adjourned," said Judge Loftis. As everyone had left the court room dad had began to walk our way.

"Before you say anything or walk away I just want to ask you something," said dad.

"And that is?" asked mom.

"I would like for all three of us to go down town and look at something... as a family I think there is something that Violet would just love, I saw it yesterday. I also want just one last memory with all three of us together as a family before the separation is final and you two move away to Florida."

"Okay Tyler, but don't try and convince me to go back to you. There is no going back to you.. not after what you did to me that day. The papers will be signed and final tomorrow you had already promised you would sign them. There is no going back on your word... not this time."

"Okay. How about we take my car? Violet you can drive if you want to."

"Sure," I replied. We were all very quiet on the way there except for dad telling me where to go, so I decided to turn up the radio just a little so it wasn't so weird. This reminded me of all the good and fun times we had as a family then one day after school it all just changed... it became this silence all the time. They never told me what happened to make this change then mom just wanted a divorce said she couldn't take the hurt anymore. That's how we ended up here in a silent car with nothing but our thoughts to keep us company.

"We're here," dad said with a big smile on his face and joy in his voice. As I found a parking spot he practically jumped out of the car to get into the pawn shop. We exited the car and dad almost dragged me into the front door and mom followed behind laughing at me trying to keep up with him. When we entered the store he told me to look around and see if I find anything I like and that he had to talk to the store clerk for a minute.

I didn't even have to look around to find the hand crafted beautiful violin. The details in the carving and the painting was breath taking. It was like a dream come true. I walked over to the beauty to take it off the stand and just hold it because I know I will never see it again. As I was at least two feet in front of it and I could only imagine what the oak felt like when I would've held it, then the store clerk came up to the violin and took it away then told me it was sold. Disappointment fell across my face. I really loved it... it just drew me in like... like it was meant for me.

I stood there for a minute until I heard my dad calling my name. I turned around to see what he was calling me for and I saw the beautiful violin in his hand and my face filled with unbearable joy. My dad knew me so well. I ran up to him and gave him a big hug and tears started to roll down my face. I don't really know why I was crying it might have been the joy or the excitement , but I didn't care dad had just made my dreams come true. Dad laughted and said I knew you would love it. He smiled at me. I kissed him on the cheek, "thank you so much," I said.
"Your very welcome," he said. Mom just smiled
"Are you ready Violet? We need to start packing," mom said.
"Yes," I said to her. "Can I drive back to?" I asked dad.
"Of course you can," he said with a smile. We drove back and said our goodbyes. Shortly after, mom and I had rode home.

Early the next morning I had started packing up my room. All the memories of the family being together and the pictures in the room made a wave of emotion came over me. I felt tears start to run down my face when I heard someone knock on the door I tried to pull myself together.

"Hey honey I just wanted to .... are you okay?" mom asked as she rushed over to my side.

"I'm fine mom. I just have a lot on my mind," I replied with a smile.

"I know it's a lot to take in at once but just think we get to start all over and no one will know the shame that your father has brought upon our family. Also, maybe you might make some friends at your new school," she replied with a smile as she wiped away my tears.

"I don't need any friends mom, all I need is my violin. Friends are just a distraction and will keep me from my music and grades."

"Will you please just make an effort... for me. You will never meet someone and fall in love and you won't have the thrill of going out and having a good time. Making memories and having fun while doing so."

"Okay mom but I am not going to fall in love it's just a pointless distraction and just puts more stress on my life."

"That's fine honey," she said with a smile. Then she pushed my hair back and kissed me on the forehead. "You're growing up so fast." I smiled.

"Mom, can I ask you something?"

"Sure go ahead and ask."

"Why did you and dad split up? I mean everything just changed one day and I feel like I did something wrong."

"You didn't do anything wrong honey, and about the separation I will tell you that all in good time." She turned away and shut my door. I continued to pack my room up and get lost in my thoughts.
