(Chapter Two)
After throwing my bag on the sofa, I head to the kitchen and open the fridge. Trying to choose which drink I should have, Aunt Helen arrives and I take a bottle of orange juice.
"Good afternoon, Roe," she greets as she goes to the sink.
Closing the door behind me, I greet her back. Then, I open my bottle and sit on the counter.
Paying attention to the dishes she's washing, she asks, "Where’s Gwen?"
I take the bottle off my lips and say, "back at our room."
She looks at me and a disgusted-annoyed look appears on her face, followed by a groan. "Ugh, Roe get down from there. You know I don't like anyone in this household having bad manners."
I jump off the counter and give out a laugh. "I'll be at our room."
As I walk through the door frame, I stop as she says, "go tell your cousins to get ready for dinner."
"What are we having?" I ask.
She looks up to think with an 'um'. "Chicken pasta."
I nod. "Okay. Call me if you need some help."
"Okay."
I make my way to our room after getting my bag from the sofa. As I turn left to the hallway, I stop at the first room, which is the boys' room, and knock on the door. The door opens, revealing Phillip, Gwen's fourteen year-old blonde-headed brother. Even though I'm a year older than him, he is a couple of inches taller than me.
"What's up?" he says.
"A Disney-Pixar movie, a two-letter word, the opposite of down," I tease.
He laughs mockingly. "Very funny, Roe."
"I'm just kidding. Anyway, your mom told me to tell you guys to get ready for dinner."
He nods. "Okay, thanks."
I lightly wave goodbye and so does he before closing the door. Then, I head to our room, which is at the end of the hall. I knock on the door to check if I could enter. She might be changing clothes and I don't want to barge in.
"Come in," she says on the other side of the door.
I twist the knob and enter the room which was once a princess-themed room. Before, the shelves were filled with dolls and stuffed toys. There was a huge doll house in the middle of the room. A pink curtain hanging on her bed before and the room was just filled with pink and a lot of girly stuff, which I felt uncomfortable with at first. When she turned twelve, she decided to give all those up and donated them.
Now, the room looks more sophisticated. The dolls on the shelves are now replaced with books. There are now two beds and on the right side of her bed is a desktop computer. The castle is replaced by an armchair. The pink curtain was removed. Everywhere there are books and other educational stuff.
As I close the door behind me, I place my bag on my desk by the door. Then, I sit down on the office chair by the table. I turn around and find Gwen at the shelf by the window.
"I remember when I first got here," I utter with a smile.
She faces me and smiles. "We were just little kids," she says, followed by a giggle.
"Yeah. And you were all princessy," I say while twinkling my fingers. Then, we both laugh. But, I slowly stop and my face turns blue.
Gwen looks puzzled at me. "What's wrong?"
I shake my head as I crunch my nose. "I just miss my parents." I sounded like I didn't care. But deep inside, it hurts. They said they'd return after a while but never showed up again. Not even a phone call. "I feel like they disowned me."
