Earbuds? Check. Black lipstick? Check. Eyeliner? Check. I was going through my regular list of things for the school day when I heard this loud crash from the hallway. I put down everything knowing that the only other person who lived here was my 60 year old grandmother. When I got to the hallway all I saw was my grandmother picking up the pieces of a vase that I bought for her a while back. She had tears in her eyes.
"Nana?" I said quietly walking over to her picking up the glass. "Nana, what's wrong" I said again more intensely. She was worrying me.But when she looked up her eyes were gone. Then she started turning into ashes, her body crumbling into millions of pieces. I screamed terrified.
Next thing I knew was that I was back in my bed. I had sweat all over my body. The sheets were wet. And yet again I had that horrible nightmare again. That nightmare was the only dream I've had for about a month now. You would think I'd get used to it right? Oh no. Not at all. Nana was the only person left that cared about me on the planet. All my best friends are either dead, hate me, or ignoring me. Why you ask? Because my parents and brother are dead.
The whole family was on a road trip for the summer. It was on the 25th of June when we got in the crash. All four of us where in the car driving late at night and I was in the back seat of the car sleeping, when I woke up to screams and the crash.
I was dazed because I hit my head against the back or the seat in front of me. But I was aware enough to see my family, my parents and brother... Dead.
It was the most horrific sight ever. My dad was at the wheel, my mom in the passenger seat, and my brother behind my mom in the back seat next to me. In the distance I could hear sirens, but I couldn't stay awake much longer. The pain in my leg was making me dizzy and nauseous.
The next time I woke up I was in the hospital with no one in the room it seemed. I knew I was in the hospital because all I could dream about was the crash. But when I woke up I was choking on this breathing tube. It turns out my grandmother was there and she had the biggest smile on her face and called the nurse in.
The nurses came running in and they saw me choking on the tube in my throat. They rushed over to take the tube out ripping the tape off my face. I muffled a scream because it really hurt when they took off the tape. But I would rather feel that then be choking on this tube.
When the tube finally came out of my throat I held my chest and sat up quickly. I instantly got dizzy and saw stars. My nana caught me before I could fall face first on the tile floor.
"What day is it?" I asked calmly when I regained my balance on the hospital bed. The nurses looked at my nana, she nodded slightly with all of the sudden sad look in her eyes.
"Alex," that's my name."It's May 30th, 2012" I wasn't totally sure I heard that right. Because the accident happened in JUNE 2011.
"What? Are you serious?!?" I asked laughing expecting them to laugh too. But when they didn't, I abruptly stopped laughing. Knowing they were serious.
"Alex, it's okay. Don't worry. You were in a coma. And we are just happy that you came out of it. They assumed you would never come out of it." Nana said while looking into my eyes and stroking my cheek. She always knew how to calm me down.
All of the sudden I remembered that December 8th was my 16th birthday. That means I'm 16 and I missed it. But right now all I should really be caring about it that I'm out of that coma and that I'm alive.
"Nana? Can I ask you something?" I said quietly looking down at the white and blue speckled tile floor. She knew what I was gonna ask, she knew I was wondering even though I had seen it for myself. She just nodded. My heart broke in that moment.
My parents and my brother... gone?? Forever? I heard this beeping noise in the background but didn't pay much attention to it until my nana told me to calm down that my heart was going way too fast.
