"This year is going to be the year," everyone squealed except for me. While my friends were dressed up as clowns, devils, vampires, and witches, I was an Olympic gymnast. I was a huge scardy-cat.
"Maybe we should wait until we're teenagers so that we can hide inside and scare the little kids," I offered. Please agree and drop the subject. Halloween is about candy, right? "You know, so that we don't have to be scared." My eyes pleaded, but my friends said no.
"Melanie, the point is that we get scared. Finally my parents will let me go, and I can't wait until next year," Elizabeth contradicted. She placed her hand on her hip and nudged the other girls to agree.
"Well, she's right you know, we've been dreaming about this forever," Sophia agreed.
Gosh this a hard decision. Do I save myself or hang out with my friends? Ummmm. . . . . Uhhhhh. . . Oh I don't know. "Well, do you think I should go with you," I asked. Maybe they would say no, that I would ruin it for them, and then I would get off the hook without ruining my social life.
The girls laughed, sounding inoffensive. The You're-So-Funny laugh. However, I was serious. "You have to come with us. It's a group thing. I just hope you don't hold it back for us," Elizabeth answered. Now if I said no I would crush their hearts.
I took a deep breath. Melanie, scardiest scardy-cat was going into a haunted house. "Of course Ill go with you," I said weakly. What could go wrong? As it turns out, a lot of things can.
