Chapter 3 | Wounds

Emily's POV:

I wake up in the morning feeling not very well rested but awake, and hungry. Maya's just escorted Miller into our room, as he has been in medical recently with a wound from Anya. I sit up slowly, and climb down the stairs. When I reach the bottom, Clarke stops me.

"Emily, are you ok?" She asks, though I'm not sure what makes her ask this.

"Yeah, why do you ask?"

"Just checking," She smiles, though I can tell that she is lying. I look over and see Jasper awkwardly talking to Maya, and I smirk, it's so obvious he likes her. Suddenly, an alarm starts to blare, and we all begin to panic, not knowing what it means. I look over to Maya, who is running to the door.

"Hey, what's going on?" I ask her worriedly.

"That alarm means the search party's back and someone needs medical attention," She says, before quickly leaving. Me and Clarke exchange glances, knowing that there are two possibilities. One is that a member of the search party got hurt, the other is that they found one of our people. We both go to follow Maya, but Jasper grabs us both by the shoulder.

"Hey, where do you two think you are going?" He asks us suspiciously.

"Maybe they found survivors," Clarke hisses, and although I seriously doubt that, I want to find out why someone needs medical attention.

"If our people are hurt we have a right to know," I argue.

"I'm pretty sure we shouldn't just go wandering around!" Jasper points out, though I grab Clarke's hand and rush out the door, Jasper following us. We run to the origin on the alarm, and here Maya ask,

"What have we got?" A woman asks, I can see surgeons everywhere, and bodies being pulled on stretchers.

"They were attacked, one dead in room 2," another man says to her. "The other took of his gloves and mask to treat him, he's in decontamination." Me, Clarke and Jasper slip into the lift with the doctors, and Clarke asks,

"Who attacked him?" The doctor looks surprised for a moment, then angry as he notices me as well.

"What are they doing here?" The surgeon asks his friend, as I grab one of their key cards and swipe it in the door leading to the patient, knowing that the radiation won't effect us. Me and Clarke run ahead, and I hear Jasper say, exasperated,

"Someone's got to keep them out of trouble!" Before chasing after us.

"Guys slow down, these people are..." He starts, before Clarke cuts him off.

"Lying to us, it's a bullet wound," Clarke shouts, and I see that the patient has indeed been shot, but grounders don't have guns, so that means some of our people have to be alive!

"Grounders don't use guns," I remind Jasper, who doesn't seem to get what we're so worked up about.

"Unless the grounders got the guns from us," Jasper points out, and I'm actually beginning to get annoyed at him for being so pessimistic.

"I think our people are alive out there!" Clarke gasps, and for the first time since I woke up in that white room, I have the smallest flicker of hope that Bellamy is alive. Not belief, but hope, and at the moment that will have to do. However, soon a woman in a plastic suit like Maya's comes in, and says almost in a tone of disgust,

"Get them out of here!" As more doctors bring in a man completely covered in radiation burns, gasping for breath. We all have wide eyes as we stare at him, and I know there is no hope for recovery.

                                                                                            *

At breakfast me and Clarke walk over to President Wallace, who is helping himself to some sausages and toast.

"We need to talk," Clarke says sternly, while the president looks as annoyingly cheerful as ever.

"Sure, lets talk over breakfast," He says, when I blurt out,

"Who shot that soldier?" The President pauses for a moment, then leads us somewhere more private.

"The patrol that was looking for your people were attacked by what you call grounders," He sighs, finally tiring of me and Clarke's persistence.

"I've fought grounders, they don't use guns," Clarke points out, while the President looks surprised.

"I never mentioned guns, Sergeant Shaw was shot with an arrow!" He exclaims, looking mildly irritated.

"That's not true, we, we saw the wound!" I stutter, completely confused and shocked that they would think we are that stupid!

"Sometimes, we feel so strongly about our people we see things that aren't there!" He says, and I'm actually quite offended at his suggestion, though I have to admit, we have been pretty obsessive.

"We'd like to see the body," Clarke commands, as if she's the one in control, though to my surprise, President Wallace agrees.

"Of course, we can go now," He says, setting down his plate and leading the way to medical, where we wait anxiously for the body to be taken out of the quarantine, which takes a suspiciously long amount of time, though I don't say anything. When the body is taken out to us, the doctor actually apologises for the wait,

"Sorry to keep you waiting, we had to finish decontamination," The doctor says, smiling charmingly.

"Thank you doctor Tsing," President Wallace says, though Clarke buts in,

"The man with the burns, how is he?" She asks suddenly, and the doctor's smile falters.

"He's recovering," Doctor Tsing starts, as if not sure what to say.

"I'd like to see him," I say suddenly, thinking we could ask him questions and find a fault in his story.

"Sir, only patients are allowed in medical," The doctor reminds Wallace, who says very quickly,

"We can arrange that," before Tsing removes the cloth from the patients body, revealing what is obviously an arrow wound. They even show us the arrow in question, which I know to be a grounder arrow, once having one stuck in my shoulder. With no more points left to argue, a defeated Clarke nods, then walks out, however, just as I say thank you, I notice something; the blood on the arrow is still wet. I'm just about to go, when Tsing tracks me eye-line, and quickly puts the arrow away, however the damage has been done, and as I hurry out, I realise that Clarke was right. There is something weird about this place, and I am going to find out what.
