Chapter 02

“Laura!”

Laura had just entered the classroom when a blur of orange curly hair whizzed passed and nearly tackled Laura to the ground, but quickly retained her balance by grasping the wall with one hand. “Maya it’s good to see you too, but, um could you please let go? I can’t breathe with you hugging my throat like that…”

Maya released her and took a few steps back. “Sorry about that.” She said with a smile. “It just feels like it’s been ages since I’ve seen you and Kathy.”

It’s only been three days… Laura thought as she rubbed her throat. “It hasn’t been that long; you have been getting pretty busy before school started. How are your parents doing?”

“They are doing rather well, as of now they are still in England so it’ll be a while until I get another call from them.”

“They’re working on some kind of play right? Any idea on how far they are on it?”

Maya shook her head slowly sending her short curly orange hair about. “Sadly no, even if they wanted to tell me they couldn’t, confidentiality and all that before the play is announced.”

The teacher came in and everyone took their seats. “That has to suck though, not knowing what your parents are doing I mean. It’s like they’re keeping a big secret from you.”

Maya shrugged her small thin shoulders. “It’s not that bad, besides I know that it means they are dedicated to their jobs. They’ll tell me eventually, just not right now.”

As the teacher began to talk Laura lowered her voice so not to be heard by the other students. “Any idea as to when they might come back home?”

“A few weeks, why?” she then gave a knowing look. “Need a place to hide from the Aunt of Doom again?”

“You can tell that much just by me asking that?” she said stiffly.

“Pretty much, and I don’t blame you wanting to hide, I do wish your Mom would come back though to kick that lady out of your house.” She then stilled realizing what she had just said. “Oh shoot, I’m sorry Laura it just slipped out.”

Laura shook her head. “No it’s okay, stuff like that doesn’t bother me anymore, so let’s just pay attention to the teacher before he yells at us for talking.” As the teacher spoke about what would be fundamental during the semester and what they would eventually be learning Laura slowly began to tune out the man going back on what Maya had said.

She was used to it, used to hearing about how her mother suddenly up and disappeared without even so much as a goodbye, she was only three years old when her mother had run out the door. Her aunt had told Laura time and time again to the point where she could no longer deny it.

Her mother was never coming back.

“So it’s true that you’re going to be in the gymnastics team this year instead of the track team?” Maya asked while sitting on a tree branch near the school, while Laura sat underneath it drinking soda.

“I was on it before you know.” She said while taking a sip.

Maya then hangs upside down in the tree branch to look at her. “Yes, but that was three years ago, and you said and I-quote: “I will never do anything with gymnastics ever again.” Remember?”

“Yeah I remember, so what about it?”

“Why’d you suddenly decided to make the switch to gymnastics again?”

Laura was quite.

“Laura.” Maya said her name in a warning tone with narrowed light green eyes. “Did something happen in the track team to make you switch sides?”
