LETTERS TO JULIET

12 September 1950

Dear Robert,

How are you in America? I'm doing fine here in our small little town. It is as green as ever, although the land below my house is slowly becoming barren. Fortunately our special pear tree is still abundant and growing, even though it stands in solitude on top of the hill.

Do you still remember our promise back then? I hope you do. We promised not to forget each other even if we grow old and grey. We were young back then and freshly graduated high school students. You were to pursue your dream of becoming the greatest doctor to ever walk the earth. I always admired you for your perseverance and dedication to everything that you do.

As for me, I finished horticulture. I am now one of the people who kept our special tree alive and well. I got your praise. Although it is hard working in the fields, especially during summer since it is scorching hot, I feel that doing what I do helps our world. You never know what might happen in the future if we do not take care of our planet. Thus, I love working under the blazing sun. Autumn here has brought a strong wind and turned the leaves into an orange hue. But I guess it is pretty natural.

Just like the tree, I feel that there are a lot of changes between us. It has been almost 5 years since we last wrote to each other. I guess your life there is very hectic.

I really miss you, my best friend. I hope I can hear from you soon.

Sincerely yours,

Juliet

Juliet,

Life here in the city isn't as easy as I thought it would be - bustling crowds, towering buildings, and a lot of people bumping into you when you walk on the sidewalks. Every morning I wake up to the sound of honking cars and noisy civilians. It is also hazardous at night... really dangerous.

I miss the countryside. I miss the fresh air, the green grass, and the colorful blossoms surrounding our special tree. Speaking of which, I really think highly of your work. I think what you do is the best. Save the planet! That has brought me to remember some memories. We were quite the duo in high school when it comes to saving our planet.

Everything is different here - rubbles and dust everywhere. The city is still experiencing the after effects of the war that has been going on around the world. I'm glad our small town hasn't been affected. Are you sure you are alright there? How about your parents? I'm sorry, I'm just very worried.

The holiday is so much different. Here, only half of the people care that it is Christmas. Most of them are still rushing along the sidewalks, ready for another day to work. Fortunately, our batch held a Christmas party last night and we had a blast.

Speaking of colleagues, I met some people here and they helped me through the tough spots when it comes to studying medicine. There's Freddie, John, Nicholas; and some girls like Sarah and Jade. You're jealous, aren't you? Don't worry, Sarah likes John and Jade is together with Nicholas.
