Chapter 2
My First Step
I think if you’re going to come out, you should tell your friends first. This is where your true friends show themselves, plus it makes good practice if you’re going to tell your mom or dad, or any one of your family members.
I first came out to my friend Davis, who I thought would be a good idea because he never judges the way people act. Of course, he didn’t. We were walking up town, on our way to Denny's to get something to eat. It was like ten or eleven o'clock at night, and we decide to get something to eat at the other end of town, how dumb.
As we were walking up, I tried to tell him. All I could muster up was: "Umm, hey, uh... Did you know I’m...." or "Uh...umm...I'm....hungry!"
He just looked at me, begin more confused with every word I say. Until about half a mile later. "Davis, I'm umm, I'm gay......yeah, and I’m gay"
It was a dead silence for about 5 seconds.
He turns to me and he says. "You are who you are, and no one has the right to tell you what you should do or be."
Now that was some deep shit. That made me feel a whole lot better about me.
"Are you going to say anything else? Are you even scared?" I said to him surprised.
"No. Why should I? You’re my friend! I don't have to do anything."
I thought this was the coolest thing I had ever seen Davis be. Then he turns to me again and says. "I kind of knew too. I always thought you were anyways."
I never felt so free in my whole life.
We went to Denny’s and had a great time. It was like I didn’t say anything at all. Like the biggest secret I had been keeping all these years has never been exposed. I was expecting the whole mob with pitchforks to be waiting for me outside my house.
I finally got this weight lifted off of my shoulders, and I’ve never been so happy in my life. Even though I told just one person, I felt great about it.
Ok, that’s one down, and one-hundred to go.
So I decided to tell my next friend, Michael.
Michael has been my best friend since Jr. High, and we always managed to go into some kind of shenanigan every time we get together. Michael is also Mormon, so I have no idea how he's going to act. But he's also been my best friend for five years, so I should know how he should act. Kind of stuck in the middle there.
At the time I worked at KFC. It’s been one whole night since I came out to Davis. I wasn’t planning on telling Michael for at least a week. I just wanted this moment to last a bit longer.
Sure enough, Davis came through the doors with Michael. Of all the restaurants in town, they decided to eat at my job. To makes matters even more difficult, my boss told me to go on break. It’s like the Universe was planning my coming out party for me.
Well, it was now or never.
I sat down with them, having a laugh, making jokes, planning our next trip out of town just to watch a movie. Then Davis gives me that look like I should go ahead and tell him already.
