Chapter 18

Closer

“C’mon! I’m starving!” Sarah whined, rubbing her stomach dramatically.

“When are you not hungry?” Cora laughed, tugging on one of Sarah’s curls.

“Hey!” Mona and I giggled as Sarah swatted Cora’s hand away from her hair. “That is so not true!”

The rest of us burst into loud giggles as Cora and Sarah started to muck around, hitting each other over the head and such.

“Let’s go!” Sarah cheered, opening the door to our cabin. “Slow down speedy Gonzales! Let me just do my hair!” Mona begged, running to the bathroom. “Jai doesn’t care what your hair looks like!” Sarah called, earning a few choice words from Mona.

“Bet James doesn’t care what yours looks like either, hey Sarah?” Cora cooed. “What’s that supposed to mean?” Sarah asked, her face going rosy.  “Please! Everyone knows that you two have something going on!” Cora stated, smiling widely. “No we don’t!” Sarah argued back, eyes wide. “Look! Her face has gone as red as her hair!” I chipped in, earning a glare from the girl in question. “Haley!” She squealed, flipping me off.

“Hey! Don’t worry Sarah; we can’t discuss boys without bringing up Haley and Skip!” Cora called, winking in my direction.

“Not this again!” I moaned, rolling my eyes. Sarah was about to say something when Mona walked through the archway, halting all conversation.

“Okay, we can go now!” She cheered. Sarah’s attention turned to Mona and she grinned. “Well it’s about time!” She yelled, opening the door and prancing out into the cold.

We all laughed, the previous conversation forgotten about and followed the fiery red head out the door.

“Helloooo ladies!” Cora called, walking into the boys’ cabin.

“Hey! We have a reputation to up hold here! You can’t just go around calling us ladies!” Luke whined, grabbing Cora by the arm and messing up her hair. “Luke! Rack off would you!” She laughed, playfully punching him on the shoulder. “Ouch Cozza, go easy on me next time, yeah?” He winked, rubbing his shoulder.

Mona was already by Jai’s side, giggling and blushing at whatever he said. Sarah and James were in the kitchen, serving something up for us to eat.  Cora and Luke were still messing around, Beau was sitting on the couch watching some football match, and I also took the liberty in noticing that Daniel was missing.

I walked over to where Beau was sitting and took a seat. “Hey Beau.” I smiled, crossing my legs on the couch.

"Sup Haley.” He nodded, not taking his eyes off the television. I frowned, Beau wasn’t acting himself and I had a mini internal debate as to see if I should ask him what was wrong or leave him be for a little while.

I decided on giving him some peace about whatever was upsetting him for a little while and if he was still upset by the end of the day, id ask him then.

“Who’s playing?” I asked, referring to the TV.

“Playing what?” He asked, sharply turning to look at me, looking slightly panicked.

“The football…” I mumbled, a little startled.

“Oh, right, um yeah… I don’t know. I don’t really follow football, I just switched it on.” He laughed uncomfortably, trying to lighten the mood.

I nodded my head at him slowly. “Right, you just looked really into it. Oh well, you must have been deep in thought then hey?” I said, giving him the opportunity to bring up the cause of his mood.

“Must have.” He said, cutting me of short.

“Okay… do you know where Daniel is?” I asked.

“Skip? Um, I think he went for a walk. Let’s go look for him.” He said, abruptly getting on his feet and pulling me out the door.

“Um, alright, okay…” I staggered; trying to gain my balance as he quickly pulled me along with him.

I looked back through the door we just exited out of to see everyone who was previously in the house sitting around the make shift dining room eating some gourmet breakfast Sarah and James must have cooked. My stomach growled miserably, but I did want to find Skip, and I wanted to know why Beau was upset.

Beau released his grip on my arm, and when I looked down I noticed two red marks from where his fingers had latched onto. I subconsciously rubbed them, they didn’t really hurt, my skin just marked up really easily.

Beau must have noticed me rubbing my arm so he looked down and was surprised to see two marks on my arm.

“Oh god! Haley I’m so sorry! I promise I didn’t mean to hurt you!” He begged, reaching for my arm to inspect it.

“Beau! I know you didn’t! My skin just marks up really easily, I promise you didn’t hurt me!” I said, grabbing his shoulders forcing him to look up at me. “Now, tell me what’s wrong with you.” I demanded, making him sit on a log which was conveniently placed 2 meters away from where we were standing.

He sighed, looking back and forth as in to buy time to come up with an excuse or something. “Alright.” He finally said, giving in. We sat down and I turned to face him.  “What’s wrong?” I asked him, looking at him. He looked away from me before turning to sit directly in front of me. “Um, well it’s about a girl. I guess…” He started, awkwardly shifting in his seat.

“So you know Evie?” He began; I racked my brain to see if I knew a girl named Evie. I had never talked to her before, but she was a pretty girl in the year below us. I think.

“Yeah.” I urged him on.

“So I’ve been talking to her for the past three months, and she’s great. I really like her y’know? Anyway, she’d always tell me that she likes me and so I of course began to like her back. She’d always flirt with me and stuff, and well yeah anyway, I asked her to go to the formal with me and she shot me down and told me that she had a boyfriend!” He exclaimed, his eyes going dark. My mouth gaped open, I was so angry that I didn’t know what to say.

”That’s the reaction I had too.” He said, looking at me, his eyes going back to his normal color. “I asked her how long she had had a boyfriend for and she laughed at me and told me that she had one the whole time we were talking and that she was just messing around with me for a bit of fun.”

I felt my face heat up with anger, how could someone do that! Especially to Beau!

“Beau, I’m so sorry!” I said, rubbing his shoulder.

“It’s okay, really Haley. I’ll get over it. I’m just angry right now.” He said, smiling at me.

“Anyway, we came out here to look for Skip and I’m feeling better now thanks to you. C’mon, look there he is!” I smiled at Beau before following with my eyes to where he was pointing, and surly enough, there was Skip prancing towards us.
